Chapter 3 - The Call to the TowerAt 5:00 PM, the rain outside St. Jude’s turned into a heavy, freezing sleet.

In the secondary lab unit on the second floor, a phlebotomist drew four vials of blood from my arm for the donor compatibility testing.
I sat on the paper-lined examination table, my sleeve rolled up, my phone vibrating furiously in my trousers pocket.
The screen displayed the name: AMELIA BROOKS.
I ignored the call. Three seconds later, the screen lit up again: MOTHER.
I slid the green icon, bringing the phone to my ear, my baritone dropping into a low, terrifying register that I had never used with my family before.
"Where are you, Ryan?!" my mother, Eleanor Vance, demanded sharply through the speaker. Her voice was laced with frantic, aristocratic panic. "Amelia has been sitting at Alinea for two hours! Her father is furious! The Brooks family was about to announce the merger deal at eight o'clock tonight!"
"Where are you right now, Mother?" I asked softly.
Eleanor paused, startled by the eerie, deadpan tone of my voice. "I am at the penthouse in Gold Coast, preparing for the dinner. What is wrong with you? Did you forget the ring?!"
"I am standing inside the pediatric wing of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital," I reported flatly, every word dropped like frozen iron onto the floorboards.
A sharp, suffocating silence dropped over the line.
"St. Jude’s...?" Eleanor whispered, her voice losing its sharp edge, replaced by a sudden, subtle flicker of hesitation. "Why... why are you there?"
"Because three hours ago, I found Grace standing under a bus shelter in the rain," I revealed, my gray-blue eyes looking through the lab glass at my three-year-old son sitting in the hallway. "And I found my three children."
Eleanor let out a sharp, choked gasp. "Ryan... listen to me... whatever Grace told you—"
"Did you hand her a non-disclosure agreement three years ago, Mother?" I interrupted, my voice vibrating through the quiet room like thunder. "Did you threaten to take my children from her if she spoke to me?!"
"She was a nobody, Ryan!" Eleanor suddenly shrieked, her aristocratic filter completely breaking into ugly, arrogant rage. "She was an uneducated girl from a working-class family in Pilsen! She was going to drag down your career! You were destined for the Brooks merger! I did what was necessary to protect this family's legacy!"
Tears of pure, unadulterated self-loathing burned behind my eyes as I realized how blind, how arrogant, and how cowardly I had been for three years. I had allowed my mother’s toxic pride to dictate my life, while the woman who had truly loved me was driven into the cold with my sick child.
"Listen to me very carefully, Mother," I spoke into the phone, every word crisp, clear, and absolute. "The Brooks merger is canceled. My position at the firm is resigned as of five minutes ago. And if you or any attorney from your office ever comes within ten miles of Grace or my children... I will personally hand the SEC the complete unredacted audit files from the Vance Family Trust."

"Ryan! No! You can't destroy everything we built!" Eleanor screamed.
I ended the call, tossed the phone onto the stainless steel table, and turned to walk back to my family.
