Chapter 3 - The Gala of the UnmaskedThe following evening at 8:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was packed to absolute capacity for the annual Romano Global & Maritime Gala.

Over five hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, syndicate capos, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
Standing at the central VIP table was Adriana Vitali—a thirty-year-old socialite wearing a ten-thousand-dollar red silk gown, holding a champagne glass, flanked by her arrogant father, Don Vincent Vitali.
"Where is Massimo?" Adriana sneered, looking at her diamond watch. "He was supposed to meet our legal team thirty minutes ago to sign the shipping merger!"
BOOM!
The heavy double mahogany doors of the grand ballroom were thrown open!
Walking down the central red carpet, flanked by Marcus Vance and six armed Romano security officers, was Massimo Romano. He wore an magnificent charcoal bespoke tuxedo, his tall six-foot-four frame radiating an unshakeable, sovereign authority.
And walking right beside Massimo, holding his arm with effortless, queenly poise, was me.
I wore a breathtaking floor-length midnight-blue silk gown that celebrated every curve of my tall, graceful figure. My dark hair fell in glossy waves over my shoulders, my hazel eyes burning with absolute, unshakeable victory, inner peace, and sovereign clarity.
Around my neck hung the five-carat sapphire pendant—the official Seal of the Romano Family Matriarch—which Nonna Rosa had personally placed on me two hours earlier.
Adriana Vitali dropped her champagne glass. The crystal smashed flat against the marble floorboards, red wine splashing over her designer shoes, as her face turned an ugly, paper-white shade of green.
"WHAT IS THIS, MASSIMO?!" Vincent Vitali roared, stepping forward frantically. "Who is this woman?! You were supposed to announce your engagement to my daughter tonight!"
Massimo stopped five feet from the Vitali family, stepping in front of me, his broad shoulders casting a protective shadow over my frame.
"She isn't a guest, Vincent," Massimo announced flatly, his deep baritone carrying cleanly across the silent room. "She is Sophie Miller—sole legitimate owner of the South River Pier Facility, and my wife-to-be."
Vincent Vitali went dead white. "THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! THOMAS MILLER SIGNED HIS EQUITY OVER TO US THIRTY YEARS AGO!"
Bridget Colton stepped forward, sliding a stack of court-stamped legal notices flat into Vincent’s trembling hands:
FORENSIC LAND RECOVERY: Certified state forensic reports proving Thomas Miller's signature on the 1996 land surrender deed was digitally forged by Vitali legal counsel.
IMMEDIATE EVICTION: Revocation of all commercial leases held by the Vitali syndicate along the South River waterfront.
ARREST WARRANTS: Federal warrants served on Vincent Vitali and Elena—the housekeeper—for Corporate Extortion, Land Fraud, and Attempted Premeditated Murder.
Two uniformed federal marshals stepped forward, locking heavy steel handcuffs around Vincent Vitali’s wrists behind his back.
"Vincent Vitali," Lead Marshal Miller declared coldly. "You are under arrest."
