Chapter 5 - The Coup on the Forty-Second Floor

By sunrise, the glass tower on the forty-second floor had undergone a quiet, bloodless revolution.
When the executive board assembled for the emergency Monday morning meeting, Grant tried to take the seat at the head of the table, shouting for security to have Eleanor removed from the building.
Security didn't move.
Because thirty minutes earlier, the corporate legal counsel had received an emergency proxy filing backed by fifty-one percent of the voting shares—shares that had quietly been acquired over the past thirty-six months through a series of anonymous trusts managed by a Swiss holding entity named Aegis Financial.
And Aegis Financial belonged entirely to Eleanor Price.
Julian sat quietly in his usual chair, watching his cousin lose his mind.
“This is a coup!” Grant screamed, slamming his fists onto the mahogany table as federal marshals stepped into the boardroom, flanking Victor Vance and three other executives in handcuffs. “You can’t do this! This is family property!”
“It was family property,” Eleanor said as she walked into the boardroom. She was back in her sharp, tailored charcoal suit, her hair pulled back into that familiar, severe clip—though now, it looked less like a disguise and more like armor. She carried a single leather folder, which she placed precisely in the center of the table.
“And you ran it into the ground, Grant,” Eleanor continued, her voice cutting through his hysterics. “The federal indictment for your offshore embezzlement was filed at 7:00 AM. Your personal assets, your cars, your downtown penthouse—all seized under civil forfeiture laws.”
Grant turned pale, looking desperately toward Julian. “Julian! Are you just going to sit there and let a secretary steal the company?”
Julian looked up slowly, his expression utterly calm. He picked up his black coffee—brewed, as always, at exactly 8:15—and took a slow sip.
“She’s not a secretary, Grant,” Julian said quietly. “She’s the majority shareholder. And as of right now, you’re fired.”
Within ten minutes, Grant was escorted out of the building by federal agents, his shouting echoing down the marble hallway until the elevator doors closed.
The boardroom grew dead silent. The remaining executives sat frozen, staring at Eleanor as if she were a ghost who had learned how to hold a sword.
“The restructuring begins today,” Eleanor announced, opening her folder. “All speculative real estate ventures are cancelled. The logistics division is being audited from top to bottom. And every dollar stolen from the employee medical fund over the past three years will be returned with interest by the end of the week.”
She looked around the table, meeting every terrified eye until her gaze finally landed on Julian.
“Is there any discussion?” she asked.

No one spoke.
“Good,” Eleanor said, closing the folder. “Meeting adjourned.”
