Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

The weekend passed in a blur of strained silences and stolen glances across the kitchen island. Damon retreated back behind his armor of corporate emails and early morning conference calls, but the atmosphere in Windmir House had permanently shifted. The invisible barrier between employer and employee had cracked, and neither of them knew how to glue it back together.

By Tuesday afternoon, Ren was knee-deep in prep for a dinner party Damon was hosting for three regional investors—his first social event since she had arrived. She had spent six hours roasting duck breast, reducing blackberry gastrique, and plating intricate amuse-bouches when the kitchen doors flew open.

It wasn't Damon.

A tall, impeccably dressed woman with sharp blonde hair and cold blue eyes strode into the kitchen, dropping a designer leather handbag onto the clean marble island with a sharp thud.

Ren blinked, pausing her knife over a board of fresh thyme. "Can I help you? The front entrance is—"

"I know where the entrance is, darling," the woman interrupted, her voice dripping with condescension as she looked Ren up and down, taking in her simple chef’s coat and flour-dusted apron. "I'm Vanessa Vance. Damon’s senior VP of operations. And more importantly, I'm the person who usually manages this house when he deigns to hire competent help instead of stray culinary students."

Ren’s spine stiffened. She wiped her hands on a cloth and turned to face the intruder. "Mr. Cole didn't mention guests arriving early for the investor dinner."

"Damon has a lot on his mind, especially with the upcoming merger," Vanessa said, stepping closer to inspect the prep trays. She reached out with a manicured finger, touching a sliver of duck breast. "Ugh, is this the reduction? It looks greasy. Scrap it and start over. Damon hates heavy fats before a financial pitch."

Ren’s temper, usually kept under tight control after years in high-stress kitchens, flared like dry tinder. "That reduction has been simmering for four hours under Mr. Cole’s explicit dietary preferences. If you touch my prep station again, Ms. Vance, I will personally throw you out the front doors."

Vanessa gasped, her blue eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom. "You insolent little—do you have any idea who you're talking to? I could have you fired before you can take off that apron. I've known Damon for ten years. I know every secret he has, every mistake he's buried, and every woman he's ever discarded when they stopped being useful."

"Is that right?"

The voice came from the doorway, cold enough to freeze boiling water.

Damon stood in the threshold, his dark suit jacket off, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his face carved from granite. The temperature in the kitchen seemed to drop twenty degrees instantly.

Vanessa’s expression morphed in a millisecond from furious to honeyed sweet. She turned, rushing toward him with her hands outstretched. "Damon, darling! Thank goodness. This little help you hired is completely out of line—she threatened me!"

Damon didn't flinch. He didn't take her hands. He walked right past her, his eyes locked entirely on Ren, whose chest was heaving with residual anger. Only when he stood beside Ren did he turn his gaze to Vanessa.

"Pack your things, Vanessa," Damon said, his voice flat, absolute, and devoid of any mercy.

Vanessa stopped dead, her mouth opening in shock. "What? Darling, you're joking. The investors arrive in two hours—"

"You are fired," Damon interrupted, his voice ringing through the kitchen like a death sentence. "Your contract is terminated effective immediately. Hand your security pass to Ruth on your way out, and if you ever step foot on my property again, I will have you arrested for trespassing."

"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked, her mask of professional composure shattering completely. "Because of some kitchen rat? What is she to you, Damon? Another charity case? Another stray you picked off the street?"

"She is the only real thing in this entire house," Damon replied, his voice dangerously low. "Get out."

Humiliated, furious, and shaking with rage, Vanessa grabbed her handbag and stormed out of the kitchen, the heavy doors swinging wildly in her wake.

Silence descended upon the kitchen once more, heavier than before.

Ren stared down at her cutting board, her hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline faded, leaving behind a hollow ache in her chest. She looked up at Damon, expecting to see regret or anger.

Instead, Damon was looking at her with an expression of such raw, agonizing intensity that it took her breath away.

"You shouldn't have done that," Ren whispered, her voice cracking. "She's your VP. That merger—"

"To hell with the merger," Damon murmured, taking a step toward her. He reached out, his warm fingers wrapping around her trembling hand, gently taking the knife away and setting it on the counter. "To hell with the company, the investors, and every single wall I built around myself."

He stepped closer, his chest nearly brushing hers, his gray eyes searching her face with desperate hunger.

"I've wanted you for months, Ren," Damon confessed, the words tearing out of him like a confession long overdue. "From the second you dropped that sauce on my shoe and looked at me like I was an idiot instead of a billionaire. I’ve wanted you so badly it's driving me insane."

Ren's breath caught in her throat. The world outside the kitchen, the investors, the debt, her brother's tuition—all of it vanished. There was only the man standing in front of her, finally breaking his own silence.

And what he did next left her completely speechless.
