Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushThe mahogany boardroom on the top floor of the Bennett Tower in downtown Chicago was a monument to corporate power. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the magnificent Windy City skyline, while around the massive glass table sat the high-ranking executives, legal counsels, and board members who had ruled the corporate world with impunity.

At the head of the table sat Richard Bennett—a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties with cold blue eyes and a shark-skin suit that screamed wealth and ruthlessness.
The double doors swung open, and silence fell over the room.
Julian rolled in, moving with quiet, absolute authority. Behind him pushed Arthur Vance, carrying a heavy leather portfolio. And walking directly beside Julian’s wheelchair, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit that Arthur had had delivered that morning, was me.
Richard Bennett frowned, his eyes narrowing as he looked at me.
—Julian, what is the meaning of this? —Richard demanded, his voice carrying a smooth, patronizing edge. —This is an executive board meeting. Outsiders—especially hired help—are not permitted.
Julian stopped his chair at the opposite end of the table, resting his hands calmly on his armrests.
—She’s not an outsider, Uncle Richard, —Julian said smoothly, his voice slicing through the heavy air like a scalpel. —Allow me to introduce Clara Vance. She is my new chief forensic auditor and senior partner in all matters concerning the Bennett estate.
Murmurs erupted around the table. Richard scoffed, leaning back in his leather chair with a dismissive wave of his hand.
—Auditor? Don't be absurd, Julian. You’re clearly losing your faculties. This woman is a nobody from the slums. We are here today to vote on your medical incapacity and transfer executive control of the trust to protect the company's stock value.
—Before you call for a vote, Richard, —Julian interrupted softly, tilting his head. —You might want to review Exhibit A in the folders my associate just distributed.
Arthur quickly slid thick, black-bound dossiers across the polished glass to every board member.
Richard frowned, picking up his copy and flipping it open. Within three seconds, the color drained entirely from his face. The confident, smug expression shattered, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic.
—What... what is this? —Richard choked out, his hands trembling as he stared at the papers.
—That, Richard, —I spoke up, my voice ringing clear and steady across the silent boardroom, —is a complete forensic audit of the subsidiary accounts you’ve been looting for the past twelve years. Offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands, unauthorized liquidations of pre-merger assets, and forged signatures—including my father’s signature, which you forged back in 2006 to cover up the embezzlement that led to the fire.
Richard slammed his hands down on the table, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the floor.
—Lies! This is all fabricated garbage! You forged these documents to smear my name! Security! Throw these fraudsters out of the building immediately!
The boardroom doors flew open, but it wasn't building security that marched in.
It was a squad of federal agents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Financial Crimes, led by an armed senior inspector who flashed a federal badge directly in Richard’s face.
—Richard Bennett, you are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit arson, —the inspector announced coldly, as the heavy click of steel handcuffs echoed through the luxury penthouse.
As federal agents hauled a screaming, thrashing Richard Bennett toward the elevators, the remaining board members sat frozen in absolute terror, too terrified to even breathe.

Julian looked up at me, a slow, breathtaking smile breaking across his face.
—Round one, —he whispered, —is ours.
