Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the EstateBy 7:00 PM that evening, the grand dining room of the Moretti Estate in Lake Forest was bathed in the warm, golden glow of crystal chandeliers and a roaring marble fireplace.

Rosie sat at the long mahogany table wearing her red velvet shoes and a beautiful new ivory dress that Dominic had sent to our apartment earlier that afternoon. She was happily eating strawberry shortcake while chatting with Marcus Vance, who had completely abandoned his stern bodyguard routine to show her magic tricks with a silver coin.
I sat directly across from Dominic, wearing a dark green silk dress that fit comfortably, sipping fine wine, feeling as though I had stepped into a sunlit dream.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the grand foyer were pushed open.
Two broad-shouldered Moretti security operators walked into the hallway, pushing a man bound in heavy steel handcuffs in front of them.
The man wore a rumpled designer suit, his dark hair disheveled, his face pale and sweating with pure, terrified panic.
I froze. The wine glass slipped from my fingers, spilling a drop onto the white tablecloth.
"Julian...?" I whispered, my voice cracking into a horrified gasp.
Rosie stopped eating, her hazel eyes widening as she looked toward the doorway.
Julian Vance—the husband who had abandoned us four years ago, the man who had left us to starve while he promised to find work—stumbled into the light of the dining room.
"Clara?!" Julian stammered, his eyes bulging in pure, frantic shock as he saw me sitting at the head of a multi-billion-dollar dining table beside Dominic Moretti. "What... what is this?! Who are these people?!"
Dominic slowly set his glass down on the table. He stood up, his six-foot-two frame casting a dark, terrifying shadow across the room.
"Julian Vance," Dominic spoke, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made the air in the room turn to ice. "Welcome back to New York."
Julian thrashed against his bonds, sweating profusely as he looked at Dominic. "Moretti... please! I don't owe your family anything! My company in Miami—"
"Your company in Miami was built on stolen union capital, Julian," Dominic interrupted flatly, walking slowly around the table toward him. "And while you were buying luxury boats for your mistress in Florida, your wife was earning $148 a week trying to keep your six-year-old daughter warm in a Queens basement."
Julian went paper-white. He looked at me, then at Rosie's new red velvet shoes, realizing with absolute, terrifying clarity that he had stepped into a trap from which there was no escape.
"Clara! Tell him to let me go!" Julian pleaded frantically, falling onto his knees on the Persian rug. "I'm your husband! I came back for you! I was going to send for you next month!"
I stood up from my chair, my posture tall, straight, and unbroken. I looked down at the man who had abandoned us with zero fear, zero anger, and zero regret.
"You never came back, Julian," I said softly, every word dropped like a cold slab of granite. "And you never intended to."
Dominic looked down at Julian with absolute, sovereign disgust.
"Marcus," Dominic commanded flatly.
"Boss?"

"Hand Mr. Vance over to the District Attorney's office, along with the full financial audit of his union thefts," Dominic ordered. "Ensure he faces the maximum federal sentence without parole."
Julian thrashed and screamed as security operators dragged him out of the estate in total, disgraced ruin, his voice fading down the long drive.
