Chapter 5 - The Mercer ConnectionThe clandestine meeting wasn't taking place in a shady back-alley warehouse like the mob movies liked to portray; Chicago’s modern syndicates operated out of high-rise corporate offices with sweeping lake views and sleek glass conference rooms.

Julian and I stood in the darkened observation room of an empty office suite two floors above the private medical clinic where Owen Mercer was currently meeting with Viktor Vance—no relation to Julian, but a notorious financial fixer for the old West Side syndicate families.

Through the one-way glass and the high-resolution audio feed piped into our earpieces, Owen’s voice came through loud and clear.

“My family’s shipping logistics contracts are ruined if Michael Carter seizes the Bellweather,” Owen said, pacing nervously across the carpeted office below. “The Hales were supposed to be our primary laundering front for West Side imports. Now that your firm is taking over receivership, Julian Vance is going to uncover every single transit manifest we’ve filed in the last five years.”

My head snapped toward Julian, who was standing beside me in the dim light. His jaw was clenched tightly, a dangerous shadow crossing his features.

“Julian Vance?” I whispered, staring up at him. “You didn't mention you were connected to the municipal infrastructure contracts tied to the West Side laundering rings.”

Julian didn't flinch. He turned his head slowly to look at me, his dark eyes entirely devoid of their previous warmth.

“I didn't mention it,” Julian said evenly, “because I’m not working for Viktor Vance. I’m working to dismantle him from the inside out. And Owen Mercer is about to lead us straight to their primary server bank.”

Down in the office below, Viktor Vance slammed a heavy leather briefcase onto the glass table, popping the latches to reveal neat stacks of bearer bonds and digital drive backups.

“If you want to save your family from Michael Carter’s wrath, Owen, you need to plant this hardware inside the Carter estate’s private server room,” Viktor instructed coldly. “It’s a trojan horse. Once connected to their mainframe, we’ll have full access to the syndicate’s financial records, shipping routes, and political leverage points. We take Michael Carter down before he takes us down.”

Owen stared at the briefcase as if it were a live grenade. “If Michael catches me... he’ll feed me to the Chicago river.”

“If you don't do it, we’ll make sure he finds out that your family was laundering money behind his back all along,” Viktor hissed.

I gripped the edge of the observation window, my knuckles turning white. They weren't just plotting against my father; they were setting a trap using Owen as an expendable pawn, hoping to ignite a full-scale turf war across Chicago.

“What do you want to do?” Julian asked softly, stepping closer until his shoulder brushed mine. “We can call your father’s enforcers right now and raid the room.”

“No,” I said, a cold, calculated clarity washing over me. My father had taught me how to read a balance sheet, but he had also taught me how to trap an opponent who thought they were outsmarting the house. “If we raid them now, Viktor slips away into another shell company. But if we let Owen take that briefcase...”

“...we feed them poisoned data,” Julian finished, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. “You want to audit the syndicate’s trap.”

“I want to bankrupt them,” I corrected, pulling out my phone. “Let’s make a phone call to my father.”
