Chapter 6 - The Fall of Hale Hospitality

By Sunday evening, the endgame had arrived.

Arthur Hale’s empire was burning to the ground. With Ted Mendoza flipping to federal prosecutors and implicating Hale in a massive, city-wide bribery and zoning-fraud scheme, the U.S. Attorney’s office issued an emergency warrant for Arthur Hale’s arrest on charges of wire fraud, extortion, and corporate racketeering.

The media was in a feeding frenzy. News helicopters hovered constantly over the Hale corporate headquarters downtown, broadcasting live feeds of federal agents carrying out bankers' boxes filled with seized documents.

I sat in my father’s private study at the Barrington estate, watching the evening news broadcast on the massive wall-mounted television screen. A glass of sparkling water sat untouched on the mahogany desk in front of me.

The door opened silently, and my father walked in, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. He looked relaxed, wearing a soft cashmere sweater instead of his usual three-piece suit.

“Arthur Hale just resigned as CEO of Hale Hospitality,” my father said quietly, walking over to stand beside my chair. “The board of directors voted unanimously to accept a buyout offer from Carter Holdings at ten cents on the dollar.”

I looked up at him. “So we own the hotels now?”

“We own the hotels, the resorts, the real estate trusts, and the land beneath their feet,” my father replied with a faint, satisfied smile. “By Tuesday morning, Hale Hospitality will cease to exist. It will be rebranded under the Carter umbrella.”

“And Preston?” I asked, thinking of the arrogant, cruel young man who had laughed while pouring red wine down my face.

My father’s smile faded into a mask of cold neutrality. “Preston’s father tried to flee to the Cayman Islands this afternoon on a private charter. Federal marshals intercepted his private jet on the tarmac at O’Hare. Preston is currently sitting in a holding cell downtown, facing criminal charges for assault, harassment, and accessory to corporate fraud.”

A quiet, heavy silence settled over the study.

Julian Vance walked in through the open doorway, holding a secure encrypted tablet. He caught my eye, offering a subtle, reassuring nod.

“Mr. Carter,” Julian addressed my father. “The federal prosecutor’s office just confirmed that the indictments are sealed and ready for filing. The Hale family’s financial footprint in Chicago is officially erased.”

“Good,” my father said, taking a sip of his coffee. He turned his slate-grey eyes toward me. “And as for you, Elena... I believe you have a community center project in the South Loop that needs its zoning permits officially reinstated by tomorrow morning.”

May you like

I smiled, standing up from the desk and feeling a profound sense of lightness settle into my chest.

“The permits will be reinstated,” I said firmly. “And this time, nobody will dare touch them.”
