Chapter 6 - The Executive Suite ReckoningBy Friday morning, the corporate fallout at Vantage Point Solutions had reached nuclear proportions.

Arthur Vance invited me down to his office to review the developments. As I walked out of the elevator on the tenth floor of the law firm, the television screens broadcasting financial news in the lobby were already flashing headlines: “Tech Consulting Firm Vantage Point Solutions Faces Sudden Leadership Shakeup Amid Federal Fraud Probe.”
Inside Arthur’s office, my lawyer was pouring two cups of fresh coffee, grinning broadly.
“It’s even better than we anticipated, Brooke,” Arthur said, handing me a cup. “When the board of Vantage Point opened that audit package, they didn't just see embezzlement—they realized Calvin had been exposing the entire corporation to federal tax fraud liabilities. They voted unanimously at midnight to strip him of his executive partnership, freeze all his remaining stock options, and initiate a civil lawsuit to recover every dollar he funneled into Apex Holdings.”
“And Stephanie?” I asked, taking a sip of the coffee.
“Stephanie Lane received an eviction notice from her luxury apartment this morning because the corporate credit card funding her rent has been permanently blacklisted,” Arthur smiled. “Furthermore, the state bar association and corporate compliance regulators are looking into her boutique consulting agency for receiving stolen corporate funds. She’s facing criminal charges right alongside Calvin.”
Just as he finished speaking, the glass door to the outer office swung open.
My heart skipped a beat, but it wasn't a stranger. It was Calvin.
He looked like a man who had aged ten years in forty-eight hours. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, and dark, exhausted bags hung beneath his bloodshot eyes. He pushed past the paralegal at the front desk and burst into Arthur’s office, his chest heaving.
When his eyes landed on me sitting calmly by the window, his expression twisted into a mixture of absolute rage and pathetic desperation.
“You ruined me!” Calvin screamed, lunging forward before two security guards grabbed him by the shoulders, pinning him against the doorframe. “You absolute psycho! You destroyed my career, my reputation, my life over a stupid affair!”
I didn't flinch. I slowly set my coffee cup down on the glass table, stood up from my chair, and walked over until I stood just a few feet away from him.
“You didn't lose your career because of an affair, Calvin,” I said, my voice cutting through his hysterical shouting with absolute, unshakeable calm. “You lost your career because you thought greed was safer than loyalty. You thought you could steal behind my back, lie to my face, and leave me with nothing while you built an empire on fraud.”
Calvin stared at me, his lower lip trembling. The arrogant corporate titan who had threatened to throw me out onto the street with nothing was completely gone, replaced by a pathetic, drowning man.
“Please, Brooke,” he whimpered, his voice cracking as he looked down at the floor, refusing to meet my eyes in front of the security guards and my lawyer. “We can settle this. Drop the charges. Sign the divorce papers on amicable terms. We can... we can fix this. I’ll leave Stephanie. It was a mistake—”
“Keep her,” I interrupted smoothly, echoing my text message from the night our lives blew apart. “I told you before, Calvin. I don't accept returns.”
Arthur Vance stepped forward, signaling the security guards. “Escort Mr. Cole out of the building. If he attempts to approach my client or her legal representatives again, file an immediate restraining order for harassment.”

As the security guards dragged a weeping, broken Calvin out of the office, his desperate cries echoing down the hallway, I turned back toward the window, looking out over the sparkling expanse of Lake Michigan.
The storm had finally passed.
