Chapter 7 - The Final Verdict

The camera crews zoomed in tight on the judges’ scorecards. Without a moment of hesitation, all three judges held up identical cards bearing a single name: Emma Hayes.
The public square erupted into thunderous applause. Marcus stood frozen, staring down at his rejected, over-engineered plate as if his entire world had just dissolved into ash.
Before Marcus could storm off the stage, Nathan Cole stepped up to the central microphone, holding a thick stack of legal papers.
“Before everyone leaves,” Nathan announced, his voice carrying the weight of a billion-dollar verdict, “there is one final announcement to make regarding Harbor & Vine.”
He turned toward the cameras. “As of 8:00 PM tonight, Cole Investments has completed a hostile takeover of Horizon Hospitality. Every asset, every lease, and every corporate account belonging to the parent company has been acquired.”
Marcus dropped his spatula, his face turning ghostly white. “That’s... that’s impossible. My uncle—â€
“Your uncle is currently answering federal investigators regarding corporate arson, insurance fraud, and property sabotage tied to the destruction of Hearth & Pine three years ago,” Nathan continued smoothly. “Harbor & Vine is now officially under new management. And its new executive consulting director is Chef Emma Hayes.”
A roar of approval rose from the crowd. Flashbulbs blinded the stage as reporters swarmed forward.
Marcus tried to push past security, but two federal marshals stepped out from the crowd, gently placing heavy zip-ties around his wrists. “Marcus Vane, you’re coming with us to answer questions regarding fraudulent credentialing and corporate conspiracy.”
As Marcus was escorted away in handcuffs, his expensive chef’s coat looking suddenly ridiculous on him, the noise of the city slowly faded into the background.
Emma stood at the center of the stage, looking across the street toward the glowing sign of her new restaurant, Daniel’s Hearth.
Nathan walked over, handing her a silver key engraved with the restaurant’s logo.
“It’s yours, Emma,” Nathan said softly. “Every seat. Every stove. Every chance to finish what your father started.”
Emma took the key, feeling its cool metal against her palm. She looked out over the cheering crowd, then up at the Seattle sky where the clouds were finally beginning to part, revealing a brilliant cluster of stars.

The fire that had tried to destroy her three years ago had not been the end of her story. It had only been the crucible.
She turned toward the doors of Daniel’s Hearth, ready to cook for a world that was finally listening.
