Chapter 5 - Unraveling the WebThe arrest was swift, quiet, and devastatingly efficient. Within minutes, Vanessa was escorted out of the executive floor in handcuffs, her corporate laptop seized, her office desk boxed up by federal investigators, and her grand scheme dismantled in broad daylight.

As the elevator doors closed behind her, I exhaled a breath so deep my chest ached.

"Well handled, Trevor," Arthur said, clapping a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "The federal marshals have already frozen the offshore accounts. Elena’s digital forensic audit completely implicates Vanessa as the sole mastermind of the embezzlement ring, isolating your signature as having been obtained under false pretenses and corporate coercion. Legally, you are in the clear."

"What about the company?" I asked, looking around my office, which suddenly felt entirely different—cleaner, stripped of the toxic illusion I had built for myself.

"The board will initiate an internal review, but with our proactive cooperation and the immediate recovery of the assets, the business will survive," Arthur replied. "Now, onto the more important matter."

He reached into his briefcase and handed me a small, sealed white envelope bearing my name in that familiar, elegant handwriting.

"What is this?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Your wife’s attorney delivered it to my office ten minutes ago, contingent upon the successful resolution of the corporate fraud investigation," Arthur explained. "She knew what Vanessa was planning to do today. She knew the exact hour the final wire transfer was scheduled to execute. She was testing your resolve, Trevor—to see if you would stand up and fix your own mess, or if you would let another person take the fall for your mistakes."

I tore open the envelope with trembling fingers.

Inside was a single handwritten note from Hannah, along with an address in a quiet residential suburb on the outskirts of Dallas, and a time: 7:00 PM tonight.

The note read:

Trevor,

You cleaned up the financial mess, but a marriage isn't saved by balancing a ledger. Grace is asleep in her crib. If you want a chance to be the father and husband you promised to be when she was born, come find us. No lawyers. No lies. Just you.

May you like

— Hannah

Tears blurred my vision. I didn't wait another second. I grabbed my keys, thanked Arthur, and rushed out of the office.
