Chapter 5 - The Final RevealThe Don of New York knelt on the wet wooden deck of a French harbor, my broad hands resting flat on my knees, my head bowed before my wife.

Isabella looked down at me, her hazel eyes filling with soft, quiet tears, but she didn't reach out to touch my hair. She didn't lean down to embrace me.

"You still don't understand, Dante," Isabella whispered, her voice cracking with a raw, heartbreaking grief. "You think this is about Valentina. You think this is about a hotel room, a sapphire necklace, or your pride."

I raised my head, looking up into her pale, radiant face. "What else could it be, Isabella? I betrayed you! I broke our vows!"

Isabella reached into the pocket of her sweater, pulled out a small white envelope, and set it gently on the wooden table between us.

I stared at the envelope. Printed across the top corner was the official crest of the New York Presbyterian Reproductive Medical Center, dated four weeks prior.

My stomach turned into a block of frozen iron.

"What... what is this?" I stammered, my fingers trembling violently as I reached out to take the paper.

"Do you remember four weeks ago, Dante?" Isabella asked softly, her hazel eyes holding mine with an intensity that made the world around us go silent. "The night I asked you to stay home for dinner because I had something important to tell you?"

My mind raced violently backward through time.

Four weeks ago. A Thursday evening. I had received a text from Valentina asking me to meet her at a private gallery opening in SoHo. I had brushed past Isabella in the foyer, kissed her cheek without looking at her, and told her I had an emergency meeting with the commission.

"I remember..." I whispered, my voice breaking into sharp, pathetic fragments.

Isabella opened the medical document, holding it up so I could see the laboratory results printed in bold black ink:

[PATIENT: ISABELLA MORETTI — PREGNANCY CONFIRMATION TEST: POSITIVE.]

[GESTATIONAL AGE: 12 WEEKS.]

The air left my lungs completely. The sky, the harbor, the boat, and my entire world tilted violently on its axis.

"A... a baby...?" I gasped out, tears spilling uncontrollably over my lashes, cutting clean tracks through the sea salt on my face. "Isabella... you're... you're carrying my child?!"

Isabella closed the document gently, placing her hand softly over her stomach—a subtle, protective movement that I had failed to notice for an entire month.

"I was going to tell you that night, Dante," Isabella wept quietly, her voice trembling with an absolute, unyielding truth. "I was going to tell you that after eleven years of praying for a miracle... our child was finally coming."

May you like

She looked straight into my gray eyes, her face carved into pure, unbroken dignity.

"And thirty minutes after you walked out the front door to meet Valentina," Isabella continued, "I saw a picture posted on a socialite's private account showing you kissing her in the gallery courtyard."
