Chapter 2 - The Echo in the PenthouseAt 8:00 A.M., my Maybach pulled up to the private rear entrance of the luxury high-rise on 57th Street—the secret penthouse where I had spent forty-eight hours with Valentina while my home crumbled into dust.

I pushed past the building manager, ignoring his nervous bows, and rode the private elevator up to Room 814.

The penthouse was silent, smelling of expensive floral perfume, cold champagne, and stale silk sheets. Valentina stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows wearing a silk robe, holding a cup of espresso, looking out over Central Park.

When the heavy front doors banged open and I stepped into the foyer flanked by four armed operators, she turned around, a bright, triumphant smile spreading across her face.

"Dante!" Valentina purred, setting her cup on the marble island, walking toward me with her arms reaching out. "You didn't answer my texts this morning. My father said—"

I didn't hug her. I didn't smile. I caught her by her forearms, stopping her three feet away, my gray eyes locking onto hers with a cold, freezing disdain that made her smile instantly evaporate.

"Dante...?" Valentina stammered, her breath hitching as she felt the iron grip of my fingers. "What's wrong? You're hurting me!"

"How did she know about room 814, Valentina?" I asked. My voice wasn't raised, but it carried an apocalyptic weight that made the color drain from her cheeks.

"Who... who are you talking about?" Valentina squeaked out, her wide brown eyes darting nervously toward my operators.

"My wife," I said flatly. "Isabella knew the exact room number. She knew about the sapphire necklace I bought you in Milan three months ago. She knew I told you I’d choose you if things were simpler."

Valentina’s jaw tightened slightly, a subtle flicker of defensiveness replacing her terror. "She found out, Dante! So what?! She’s a mob wife who lives on your money! You’re the Don of the Moretti family! Men in your position have mistresses! She was supposed to stay in her place, take her allowance, and look the other way!"

The sheer, arrogant superficiality of her words struck my chest like a physical blow.

In that single second, looking at this twenty-nine-year-old woman who thought my empire was built on money and vanity, I saw the absolute, terrifying scale of my own stupidity.

I had traded a diamond forged in fire for a glass trinket.

I released her arms so abruptly that she stumbled back against the kitchen island.

"Get your clothes, Valentina," I ordered, my voice deadpan, cold, and final. "You have thirty minutes to clear every item you own out of this building."

Valentina gasped, tears of pure, furious shock welling in her eyes. "You're kicking me out?! Because she threw a hysterical tantrum and walked away?!"

May you like

"She didn't throw a tantrum," I whispered, stepping close enough that my shadow completely engulfed her. "She showed me what a real Donna looks like. And she proved that I was never worthy of standing beside her."

I turned my back on her weeping, walking out into the corridor, leaving the nine-month lie behind me forever.
