Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over the CradleWhen I opened my eyes, the world was dim, quiet, and smelled of antiseptic and ozone.

The steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep of a heart monitor chimed somewhere to my left.

I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain across my lower abdomen forced me back onto the pillows. I gasped, my hands flying to my stomach.

It was flat.

"The baby..." I panicked, my voice a dry, raspy whisper. "Where is my baby?!"

"He's safe, Lena."

I turned my head. Sitting in a leather armchair beside my bed was Adrian.

He looked exhausted. His charcoal jacket was gone, his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, showing dark smudges of dry blood across his cuffs. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark circles, but the cold, distant aura he usually wore had completely vanished.

"Adrian..." I breathed, tears instantly overflowing my eyes. "Is he... is he alive?"

Adrian stood up slowly, walking to the side of my bed. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently wiping the tears from my cheeks before resting against my jaw.

"He's in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," Adrian said, his voice deep and raspy. "He weighs three pounds, eight ounces. He's tiny, Lena... so damn tiny. But Dr. Harrison says his lungs are strong. He's fighting."

A massive sob tore through my throat. Adrian leaned down, wrapping his large arms around my shoulders, pulling me gently against his chest while being careful of my surgical incision. I buried my face in his neck, breathing in the familiar scent of sandalwood and rain that I had missed for eight agonizing months.

"Why did you run, Lena?" Adrian asked quietly into my hair, his grip tightening just a fraction. "Why didn't you tell me you were carrying my child?"

I pulled back slightly, looking into his pained eyes.

"Because of your world, Adrian," I whispered honestly. "Eight months ago, I found out about the threats against your life. I saw the men in dark suits following us. I heard the phone calls about the Moretti syndicate. I realized that being Mrs. Adrian Whitmore meant living with a target on my back. I couldn't bring a child into that violence."

Adrian’s jaw clenched hard. He looked away for a brief second, a cold, lethal shadow passing over his features.

"You thought I couldn't protect you," he said softly.

"I was terrified," I admitted. "And when you became distant, when you started spending nights away from home without explanation, I thought... I thought you didn't love me anymore. I thought I was just a quiet trophy wife you kept in a golden cage."

"I was clearing the field, Lena," Adrian said, holding my face in both of his hands, his thumb stroking my lip. "The nights I disappeared? I was destroying the Moretti network piece by piece so they could never reach you. I made myself a monster in the dark so you could live in the light. But when I came home eight months ago and found your closet empty and a divorce agreement on my desk... I thought I had lost the only good thing in my life."

Before I could answer, the door to the private room creaked open.

A tall man in a navy suit stepped inside, holding an encrypted satellite phone. It was Julian, Adrian's chief security officer.

"Boss," Julian said gravely. "We have a problem at the NICU floor. Marcus Moretti’s men just flagged the hospital's central registry. They know the baby was born."
