Chapter 6 - The Final AuditBy sunrise, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant autumn morning that painted the Chicago skyline in shades of amber and gold.

I stood on the private balcony of our penthouse suite in downtown Chicago, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, watching the city wake up far below.
The past forty-eight hours had moved with the relentless, unyielding speed of a machine.
Dominic Fleming had spent the night in a federal holding cell, denied bail due to the severe flight risk posed by his offshore accounts and the multi-million-dollar wire fraud charges filed by both the U.S. Attorney’s office and the Sterling Group legal division. Sterling-Vanguard Enterprises had been placed into emergency corporate receivership, its assets liquidated, and its brand rebranded under the direct management of the Sterling Trust.
Elena Vance and her father had issued a public press release distancing themselves entirely from Dominic, claiming they were victims of his elaborate corporate deception.
And Chloe? She was currently cooperating with federal prosecutors, trading every detail of Dominic’s illegal slush funds in a desperate attempt to shave years off her own impending conspiracy sentence.
The parasite had been flushed out of the system entirely.
Soft footsteps echoed behind me on the balcony tiles.
Victor stepped out into the morning air, handing me a freshly printed legal brief with the official seal of the Cook County Circuit Court.
"It's done," Victor said quietly, leaning against the glass railing beside me. "The expedited divorce decree was signed by Judge Vance an hour ago. Full custody of Sophia awarded to you, absolute forfeiture of all marital property by the respondent, and a permanent restraining order prohibiting Dominic from ever coming within five hundred yards of either of you."
I took the document, flipping open the crisp white pages until my eyes landed on my signature at the bottom.
Vivienne Sterling.
I hadn't used my family name in six years. I had hidden it away like a dark secret, believing that true love required stripping away my armor and making myself small enough for an ordinary man to feel tall.
I had learned my lesson. True strength doesn't hide. It protects.
"How is Sophia?" I asked, looking up at my brother.
"She's downstairs eating pancakes with our mother, completely oblivious to the fact that her world just underwent a tectonic shift," Victor smiled gently, his stern features softening. "Kids are resilient, Viv. Especially when they have a mother who stands like a mountain."
I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling the warmth spread through my chest.
"I thought I wanted a quiet, ordinary life, Vic," I murmured, watching a hawk soar past the towering skyscrapers in the distance. "I thought ambition and wealth were toxic."
"Money and ambition aren't toxic, little sister," Victor replied, placing a warm hand over mine. "They're just tools. They amplify whatever is already in a person’s heart. Dominic was rotten from the start; wealth just gave him the megaphone to prove it."
He paused, looking down at the street below.
"What's next?"

I looked back down at the signed divorce decree in my hands, then out toward the endless, beautiful horizon of the city where I had built my new beginning.
"Next?" I smiled, a bright, unburdened expression that hadn't touched my face in years. "I think I'm going back to work."
