Chapter 4 - The Trap is SetBy 11:45 PM, the quiet, tree-lined street outside our Chicago estate looked like a crime scene staging area, though no flashing lights gave away our position. Two matte-black unmarked SUVs had parked silently half a block away down the drive, their headlights off, carrying four of the nation’s top private security operatives recruited directly from my firm's crisis management division.

I walked back down the grand staircase into the foyer.
The coffin still stood in the center of the living room, illuminated by the dim chandelier light. The house was dead silent, save for the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.
As I reached the bottom of the stairs, the double doors of the study swung open.
My mother stepped out, holding a crystal decanter of scotch and two glasses. She looked tired, her hair slightly disheveled, but her eyes still held that cold, predatory glint that had kept her at the top of Chicago’s corporate food chain for decades.
"Ethan," she said, managing a smooth, practiced smile as she approached me. "I was wondering when you'd come out of your office. I poured you a drink. You look like a man who needs to steady his nerves."
I didn't take the glass. I just looked at her hands—hands that had signed off on corporate embezzlements, and hands that had locked my wife in a concrete cell beneath our feet.
"Where is Ryan?" I asked quietly.
"Upstairs in the den, dealing with some urgent paperwork regarding the estate probate," Eleanor replied smoothly, setting the tray down on a mahogany side table. She stepped closer, lowering her voice into a tone of maternal concern. "Listen to me, Ethan. I know this is difficult. Losing Olivia... it’s tragic. But life moves on. We have an empire to protect. Once the probate documents are signed tomorrow morning, we can begin consolidating the assets—"
"Consolidating which assets, Mother?" I interrupted, my voice devoid of emotion. "The ones you stole from the secondary trust, or the ones you plan to loot after framing me for financial mismanagement?"
Eleanor’s hand froze halfway back to her side. The maternal mask slipped instantly, revealing the cold, calculating opportunist underneath. ⚙️
"What did you say?" she whispered sharply.
"I said," I repeated, stepping forward until she was cornered against the side table, "the game is over."
Before she could speak, the front doors of the estate suddenly burst open with a resounding crash.
Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed across the marble foyer as two armed private security operatives and two state investigators in tactical vests strode into the house.
Eleanor gasped, stumbling backward against the table, knocking the crystal decanter to the floor where it shattered into a thousand glittering pieces.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as she pointed a shaking finger at the agents. "Get out of my house! Do you know who I am?!"
"Eleanor Thorne," the lead investigator announced clearly, pulling a laminated badge from his jacket pocket and stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. "You are under arrest for the kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and suspected homicide of Olivia Thorne. You have the right to remain silent—"

"This is a mistake!" Eleanor screamed, thrashing wildly as the investigator grabbed her wrists and spun her around, clicking the cuffs into place with a sharp, metallic snap. She twisted her head around, her eyes locking onto mine with pure, venomous hatred. "Ethan! You ungrateful bastard! You're arresting your own mother over a dead woman?!"
"She wasn't just a dead woman, Mother," I said, my voice dropping an octave as I pulled the microSD card from my pocket and held it up under the chandelier light. "She was my wife. And she left me receipts."
