Chapter 7 - The Sunrise Over El Viso and the Balance RestoredSpring arrived in Madrid with an explosion of vibrant color, warm sunshine, and the sweet, intoxicating scent of blooming jasmine across the El Viso neighborhood.

The criminal trial had concluded two weeks prior. Álvaro was sentenced to six years in federal prison for corporate fraud, forgery, and systematic asset embezzlement. Sergio and the corrupt notary received similar sentences, while Mercedes and Irene were slapped with heavy financial penalties and suspended prison terms that effectively stripped them of their social standing and wealth.

My life, by contrast, had expanded into something vast, beautiful, and completely uncompromised.

I had been promoted to managing director of risk compliance at my consultancy firm, overseeing international audits and mentoring young female auditors breaking into a male-dominated corporate world. I no longer hid my brilliance or shrunk my presence to accommodate the fragile egos of insecure men. I owned my power, my mind, and my freedom.

On a Saturday morning in early May, I stood on the front steps of the chalet, dressed in a sharp, tailored cream-colored linen suit, locking the front door behind me.

Pilar was watering her hydrangeas across the street, waving cheerfully as I walked down the path.

—Going somewhere special, Lucía? —she called out.

—Just catching a flight, Pilar, —I smiled brightly, holding up a small leather weekender bag.

—Ah, —Pilar chuckled knowingly. —Paris?

I laughed, the sound ringing clear and free across the quiet morning street.

—Not this time, Pilar. This time, I’m heading to Vienna for an international audit convention. And unlike last time... I’m the one holding the return ticket, and nobody is waiting at home to steal my seat.

As I climbed into my car, turned the ignition, and pulled away from the curb, I looked in the rearview mirror one last time. The El Viso chalet stood tall, proud, and completely secure against the morning sun.

The audit of my life was finally complete. And every single column balanced out to absolute, unshakeable peace.
