Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of ConstanceAt 5:00 PM that afternoon, inside the grand, crystal-chandeliered ballroom of the Grand Hotel Minneapolis, sixty of the city's most affluent socialites, corporate directors, and politicians sat at candlelit tables for the annual Abernathy Children's Foundation Gala.

Constance Abernathy stood near the podium wearing a thirty-thousand-dollar emerald silk gown, her diamonds sparkling under the spotlights, holding a glass of champagne.

She was still fuming from the embarrassing incident three hours earlier when her card had been declined at the auction counter, but she had managed to smooth it over by claiming a temporary "banking system glitch."

"Ladies and gentlemen," Constance smiled smoothly into the microphone, her voice dripping with practiced, royal elegance. "Tonight, as we raise funds for our pediatric care facilities, I am proud to announce that the Abernathy family—"

BOOM!

The heavy double oak doors at the back of the ballroom were thrown open with a thunderous crash.

Three federal prosecutors, accompanied by ten uniformed federal marshals and local police officers, flooded into the ballroom.

The ambient music cut off abruptly. The sixty high-society guests gasped, turning their heads in shock as the officers marched cleanly down the central aisle toward the stage.

Leading them was Special Agent Sarah Vance.

"Constance Abernathy!" Agent Vance announced, her voice echoing clearly through the speaker system. "Step away from the podium!"

Constance’s sharp face contorted in wild, indignant fury. She gripped the microphone tightly, her emerald-ringed hand trembling. "How dare you interrupt my charitable event! Do you have any idea who I am?! I am Constance Abernathy! Call the Chief of Police immediately!"

"The Chief of Police signed your arrest warrant an hour ago, Mrs. Abernathy," Agent Vance stated cleanly, walking up the stage stairs, holding open a thick leather binder.

"You are charged with thirty-four federal counts of wire fraud, grand embezzlement, falsification of tax-exempt charitable records, and illegal offshore capital conversion."

The ballroom erupted into a chaotic storm of shouts and gasps. Society women covered their mouths, board members pulled out their phones frantically, and news photographers snapped dozens of bright flashing pictures.

Constance’s face went paper-white. Her champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the wooden podium floor, spilling amber liquid across her silk dress.

"This is a mistake!" Constance shrieked, her regal composure completely shattering into ugly, desperate terror. "It's that little bitch Freya! She tampered with the accounts! She lied to you!"

"Freya Lindqvist provided six years of unbroken, certified bank records, Mrs. Abernathy," Agent Vance corrected smoothly, taking Constance's arms and bringing them behind her back.

Heavy steel handcuffs clicked tightly around Constance's manicured wrists.

The queen of Minneapolis society was led down the stage steps in chains, her emerald dress trailing over the spilled champagne, screaming curses into the flashing cameras as she was escorted out into the freezing rain.
