Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the LedgerKieran froze mid-breath, his chest heaving, his jaw sagging open as my words sank into his mind like a lead weight.

"What... what did you say?" Kieran stammered, his arrogant rage faltering for a fraction of a second.

"Do you really think I spent eight years sitting in your family's estate playing the quiet, dutiful wife while you and your mother ran the Abernathy Children's Foundation?" I asked smoothly, stepping over the broken plastic and glass, pulling a secondary encrypted tablet from my blazer pocket.

I tapped the screen twice.

A high-definition audio file began playing through the tablet's speakers—filling the ruined office with Constance Abernathy's unmistakable, crisp voice recorded four months ago:

“Kieran, move the three million from the pediatric wing fund into the Cayman holding account before the annual audit. Freya won't notice. She thinks the credit card statements are just for my dresses.”

Kieran’s face went dead, paper-white under the office lights. The color drained from his lips, leaving him looking like a ghost standing in my living room.

"You... you wiretapped my mother's private office?" Kieran rasped out, his hands shaking violently at his sides.

"I didn't need to wiretap her office, Kieran," I revealed, holding up the tablet displaying live, mirrored cloud drives updating in real-time. "Six years ago, when you asked me to add Constance as an authorized user on my premium account, you made one fatal mistake. You used the foundation's primary tax-exempt routing portal to process her monthly statement reimbursements."

Kieran stumbled back against the doorway, catching his breath in wild, shallow gasps.

"Every time Constance bought a diamond necklace or booked a first-class ticket to Paris on my card," I explained, taking a slow step toward him, "the foundation's automated ledger recorded it as a 'direct medical equipment acquisition.' For six years, your family has been laundering offshore cartel capital and tax-exempt charitable donations through my personal credit line to fund your mother's lifestyle."

"Freya... no..." Kieran whimpered, stepping forward, his hands coming up in a pathetic, pleading gesture. "Freya, listen to me... it was my mother's idea! I tried to stop her! We can talk about this!"

"We aren't talking anymore, Kieran," I said softly, pointing toward the open front door where two black SUVs had just pulled up to the curb, their red and blue emergency lights flashing bright against the icy Minneapolis rain outside.

Four uniformed agents from the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, flanked by two federal marshals, stepped through my ruined doorway.

Leading them was Senior Special Agent Marcus Sterling.

"Kieran Abernathy," Agent Sterling announced cleanly, holding up a federal warrant stamped with a bright red judicial seal. "You are under arrest for grand wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering through a tax-exempt charitable organization."

Kieran turned to run toward the back patio, but two marshals moved smoothly, grabbing his arms, driving his face flat against the wall, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, heavy CLICK.

Kieran shrieked in pure, unadulterated terror, turning his head to glare at me as he was dragged toward the door. "FREYA! YOU RUINED US! MY MOTHER WILL DESTROY YOU!"

"Your mother is currently being arrested at the Grand Hotel auction, Kieran," Agent Sterling added deadpan, picking up the destroyed hard drive from my floor to seal it in an evidence bag. "Have a nice afternoon."
