Chapter 7 - Sunrise at Stonebridge

The first rays of golden autumn sunlight broke over the eastern ridge of the Hudson Valley, casting a warm, amber glow across the manicured lawns and stone courtyards of Stonebridge.
Inside the master suite, the room was filled with the soft, bubbling laughter of a baby.
Emily sat propped up against the plush goose-down pillows of the king-sized bed, a cup of steaming Earl Grey tea in her hands. Beside her, little Leo—now seven months old—was happily kicking his legs, trying to grab onto Alexander’s index finger as Alexander held him above the mattress.
—Careful, CEO Hayes, —Emily teased, a bright, musical smile lighting up her face. — If you drop him, you’ll have to explain to the board why our primary heir has a bruised knee.
Alexander laughed, gently lowering the baby down into Emily’s arms.
—The board will forgive me. After all, I’m the majority shareholder of this household, —Alexander replied smoothly, leaning down to press a soft kiss against Emily’s temple, then another against the baby’s chubby cheek.
He straightened up, buttoning his jacket as the grandfather clock in the hallway chimed eight times.
—I have to head into the Manhattan office for the morning merger review, —Alexander said, grabbing his briefcase from the side table. — Will you be alright here today?
—More than alright, — Emily smiled, looking out the large bay windows toward the sunlit gardens where the mist was slowly rising from the river. — For the first time in my life, I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
Alexander paused at the door, his stormy gray eyes softening as he looked at the two people who had transformed his cold, calculated world into a true home.
—I’ll be back by dinner, — he said softly. — Don't wait up for me if the little guy keeps you busy.
—I never do, — she replied with a wink.
The door clicked shut.
Emily looked down at her son, who had finally drifted off to sleep against her chest, his tiny chest rising and falling in perfect, peaceful rhythm.

Outside, the estate was bathed in a brilliant, unending dawn. The shadows of the past—the blood on the marble, the locked gates, the seventeen unanswered calls—were gone forever, swept away by the unwavering devotion of a man who knew how to cherish what others had carelessly thrown away.
Emily closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of cedar, coffee, and new beginnings, knowing with absolute certainty that the future was finally, beautifully, safely theirs.
