Chapter 3 - The Offer at the PorchThe morning fog hung low over the wooden porch as Leandro stepped into the open air. He didn't raise his gun. He held it at his side, his posture relaxed, looking down at the fifteen armed men surrounding his perimeter as if they were nothing more than an inconvenient swarm of flies.

The man with the cigar—Dominic Moretti, Leandro’s half-brother and rival capo—smirked, taking a slow step up the gravel path.

“Look at you,” Dominic mocked, his eyes scanning Leandro’s stained shirt and banded leg. “Rescued by the timber trees. We tracked your flight path the second your pilot turned off the transponder over Connecticut. It took three shoulder-fired missiles to bring that bird down, Leandro. You should have stayed in the water.”

“You always lacked imagination, Dominic,” Leandro replied coldly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent clearing. “You used a ten-million-dollar missile team and still managed to miss my heart.”

Dominic’s smirk faltered, his jaw clenching around his cigar. “It doesn't matter. You’re trapped against a dead lake with a ruined leg and one magazine. Hand over the ledger for the Brooklyn terminals, and I’ll make sure your death is quick.”

Inside the cabin, Elara sat huddled beneath the kitchen table, her fingers trembling as she picked up the sleek satellite phone. She pressed '3' and hit the green call button.

It rang once.

“Speak,” a harsh, heavily accented voice answered instantly.

“Leandro sent me,” Elara whispered, tears burning her eyes as she heard the raised voices outside. “He’s at Blackwater Lake. There are five black SUVs and fifteen men with guns surrounding the cabin. He told me to tell you the Architect is here.”

A sharp, violent intake of breath sounded over the line.

“Hold the line, girl,” the voice commanded, cold and efficient. “We are ten minutes out by air. Tell Leandro the Northern Division is airborne.”

The line went dead.

Ten minutes.

Elara looked out the low kitchen window. Dominic was already raising his hand, gesturing for his men to advance up the porch steps.

“Who else is in the cabin, Leandro?” Dominic asked, his eyes drifting toward the small glass windows. “We saw the smoke from the chimney. Did some local peasant fish you out of the mud?”

Leandro shifted his weight, his broad body intentionally blocking the front window, hiding Elara from their sight.

“There is no one here,” Leandro lied smoothly.

“Search the house!” Dominic ordered, waving his arm.

Two armed enforcers lunged up the porch steps, their automatic weapons raised.

Leandro moved.

Despite his injured thigh, his reaction was terrifyingly swift. He raised his pistol and fired two shots in a fraction of a second.

BANG! BANG!

The two men collapsed backward off the porch, their weapons clattering against the gravel.

Panic erupted across the driveway. The remaining thirteen men dropped behind the heavy doors of the Escalades, opening fire on the wooden cabin.

TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Spinters exploded from the porch pillars. Glass shattered inward as the windows disintegrated, raining sharp shards down onto the hardwood floor. Elara covered her head beneath the kitchen table, screaming as the deafening roar of automatic gunfire tore her sanctuary apart.

Leandro ducked behind the reinforced oak front door, returning fire with lethal, surgical precision. Every time his weapon discharged, another man in the driveway fell. But his slide locked back after six shots.

He was empty.
