Chapter 6 - The Confession of the DonBy late afternoon, the Tribeca estate had been transformed into an impenetrable armed camp. Federal sweepers and private cleanup teams had scrubbed away the evidence of the skirmish, while heavy steel shutters were lowered over every ground-floor window.

I sat in Dante’s private study—a massive room lined with leather-bound books, antique globes, and a crackling stone fireplace. I wore an oversized cashmere sweater Dante had insisted I change into, holding a steaming mug of hot tea between my trembling hands.

Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the Hudson River as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of orange and crimson.

"Julian Vance wanted Orion," Dante spoke quietly, his voice carrying a dark, brooding weight. "Not just because he's a prized protection animal. Orion was bred from a specific bloodline that our families share. In the old country, whoever controls the bloodline controls the syndicate's foundational trusts."

"And what about me?" I asked, looking down into my mug. "Where do I fit into these foundational trusts?"

Dante turned away from the window, walking slowly across the room until he stopped right in front of my chair. He crouched down so his eyes were level with mine. The harsh, terrifying mafia boss had vanished; in his place was a man carrying twenty years of unbearable ghosts.

"Twenty years ago," Dante began, his voice rough and uneven, "my uncle tried to consolidate power by purging anyone loyal to my father. Your parents—who were part of our inner circle—refused to bow to him. They smuggled you out of the city to keep you safe. My father spent his entire life looking for the baby girl who vanished from St. Jude's."

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently touching my cheek, tracing the line of my jaw with a tenderness that made my breath hitch.

"I spent my life believing I was alone," Dante whispered, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that felt like a physical touch. "A monster built to rule a city of ash and blood. And then last night, a waitress with my family's blood in her veins knelt down in a crowded restaurant and showed kindness to a broken dog."

"Dante..." I breathed, my heart fluttering wildly against my ribs.

"You aren't going back to that restaurant, Olivia," he said, his tone absolute, unshakable, and fierce. "You aren't paying rent, and you aren't working double shifts. You belong here. With me. With your family."

"You're asking me to trust a world I don't even understand," I murmured, placing my hand over his on my cheek.

"I'm not asking you to trust the world," Dante replied softly, pressing a lingering kiss against my knuckles. "I'm asking you to trust me. Because I will burn New York to the ground before I let anyone lay a finger on you."
