Chapter 5 - The Weight of the CrownBack at the Moretti estate, the tension in the grand villa had shifted. The immediate threat from Marcus and Vanessa had been neutralized, but for Cara Fields, the reality of her new existence was beginning to set in with crushing weight.

She sat in the expansive conservatory at the back of the house, looking out over the manicured rose gardens through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. She hadn't been locked in a cell, but she wasn't free to leave either. Her old apartment in South Philly had been cleared out by Dante’s men, her rent paid in full, and her belongings safely transferred into a luxurious guest suite on the second floor of the mansion.

The door opened quietly, and Dante walked in. He had changed out of his blood-stained suit into a dark cashmere sweater and slacks, looking less like a syndicate boss and more like a tired man carrying the weight of an empire.

He walked over and placed a small, elegant black velvet box on the glass table in front of her.

"What is this?" Cara asked suspiciously, not touching it.

"Open it," Dante said, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite her.

Cara lifted the lid. Inside rested a delicate, platinum pendant shaped like a small soaring falcon, encrusted with tiny, flawless diamonds.

"I don't accept gifts from mafia bosses," Cara said, pushing the box slightly away.

"It’s not a gift," Dante corrected quietly. "It’s a badge. As of today, the Moretti family network has been informed that you saved my life. Anyone who crosses you crosses me. That pendant tells every capos, every associate, and every rival syndicate in this city that you are under my personal protection."

Cara looked up at him, her grey eyes flashing with frustration. "I didn't ask for protection, Dante! I asked for my life back! I want to go back to Bellini’s. I want to serve tables, pay my own rent, and worry about normal things—not dodging bullets and witnessing mafia executions!"

"You can't go back, Cara," Dante said, his voice firm, carrying an absolute, unyielding finality. "The moment you pulled me out of that wreckage, your old life ceased to exist. Marcus’s loyalists are still scattered across the city. If they find out you were the one who ruined their coup, they will hunt you down to the ends of the earth. Here, behind these gates, you are untouchable. Outside... you won't survive forty-eight hours."

Cara felt a hot tear slip down her cheek. She wiped it away angrily, refusing to look weak in front of him. "So I’m just your prisoner in a golden cage? Is that it?"

May you like

Dante looked at her for a long, intense moment. The cold armor he wore around the world seemed to crack just a fraction, revealing the lonely, hardened soul beneath.

"You are never a prisoner here, Cara," he said softly, leaning forward. "You are the only person in this entire city who looked at a dying man and decided he was worth fighting for. Give me time to clean up the rest of the loose ends. Once the syndicate is secure and my enemies are dealt with... you can choose whatever path you want. But until then, stay close to me."
