Chapter 2 - The Silent AllianceMargot knew that if she went to a standard high-street lawyer, Lucas’s powerful network in Pine Ridge would catch wind of it immediately. Lucas Stephens was a senior board member of the city’s premier real estate firm and golfed with half the family court judges in the district.

She needed someone outside his circle—someone who hated Lucas as much as she was beginning to.
Two days later, while Lucas was at his club, Margot drove to the industrial edge of the city. She stopped in front of a modest brick building bearing a faded brass plaque: Vance & Associates, Forensic Accounting & Family Law.
In the office sat Evelyn Vance, a sharp-eyed woman in her late fifties with silver hair pulled into a tight bun. Evelyn had once been the lead forensic auditor for the state tax authority before opening her private practice.
"Mrs. Stephens," Evelyn said, pouring two cups of black coffee. "Your message sounded urgent. What can I do for you?"
Margot didn't say a word. Instead, she laid out a stack of high-resolution printed photos she had taken from Lucas’s hidden box.
Evelyn picked up her glasses, leaned forward, and began flipping through the pages. As the minutes ticked by, the attorney’s calm expression transformed into a tight, hardened scowl.
"This isn't just a dirty divorce prep, Margot," Evelyn said quietly, looking up over her rimless glasses. "This is systematic, long-term financial fraud and grand larceny."
"How bad is it?" Margot asked, her voice tight.
"Over the past eight years, your husband has redirected approximately $4.2 million of your author royalties into an off-shore trust," Evelyn explained, pointing at a bank statement. "He used your signature on an old power of attorney document—likely one you signed when you bought your home—to create secondary accounts in his name only. And this revised will? It strips you of all property rights, assigning the Pine Ridge estate to L&M Legacy Holdings."
"Who is the 'M' in L&M?" Margot asked, a cold knot forming in her stomach.
Evelyn pulled up her computer, typed rapidly for a few moments, and turned the screen around.
"L&M stands for Lucas and Melisa. Melisa Vance—no relation to me, thank God. She’s a thirty-four-year-old wealth management consultant at his firm. And according to these property deeds, she currently lives in a luxury condo in downtown, paid for by... guess who?"
Margot stared at the picture of the young, dark-haired woman on the screen. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with violent clarity. The "She has no idea" phone call. The subtle laughter. The impatience to get her signatures. Lucas wasn't just planning to leave her penniless; he was planning to walk away into a brand-new life with a woman half his age, funded entirely by Margot’s blood, sweat, and creative labor.

"What do we do?" Margot asked, her voice trembling—not with fear, but with an electric rage she had never felt before.
Evelyn leaned back and smiled—a cold, ruthless smile. "We play his game, Margot. He thinks you're a sheep. He thinks you're going to sign whatever Arthur puts in front of you. So... we give him exactly what he expects, until the moment we pull the rug out from under his feet."
