Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the OfficeThree days passed inside the limestone fortress.

I wasn't a prisoner—technically. I could walk the manicured gardens, read in the sprawling library, and eat gourmet meals prepared by a private chef. But every time I looked toward the iron security gates guarded by men with submachine guns, I knew the golden cage was still a cage.
Dante spent most of his time locked in his third-floor executive office, interrogating captured associates, reviewing financial records, and hunting down the second conspirator who had helped Vanessa tamper with his car.
On the fourth evening, a young maid named Rosa handed me a stack of fresh linens and whispered, "Mr. Moretti wants you in his study. Immediately."
My heart did a nervous flip. I climbed the grand staircase, my hand trailing along the polished oak banister, and knocked softly on the heavy double doors of Dante’s private office.
"Enter," his voice called from within.
I pushed the door open. The room smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and expensive bourbon. Maps of Chicago shipping routes, financial spreadsheets, and black-and-white surveillance photos were tacked across a massive corkboard on the wall.
Dante stood by the window, a glass of amber liquid in his hand, staring out into the twilight.
"You wanted to see me?" I asked, staying near the doorway.
"We found him," Dante said without turning around.
"Who?"
"Julian Vance," Dante replied, his voice chillingly flat. "My chief financial officer. The man who managed my offshore accounts, coordinated with the city council, and apparently spent his weekends sharing more than just corporate strategies with my wife."
I swallowed hard. "Is he...?"
"He’s dead, Cara," Dante turned around, his gray eyes fixing on mine. "He tried to board a private flight to Zurich out of O'Hare two hours ago. Mateo intercepted him on the tarmac. Julian confessed to everything before Mateo ended the problem."
A cold shiver ran down my spine. This was the mafia—real, brutal, and utterly merciless. And I was standing in the epicenter of it.
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked, my voice shaking slightly. "I'm just a waitress from Bellini's. I don't belong in your world, Mr. Moretti. Now that your wife is locked away and her lover is dead... can I go home?"
Dante set his glass down on the mahogany desk and walked slowly toward me.
"Go home to your mold-flecked apartment where your landlord threatens eviction every month?" Dante asked, stopping just a foot away. "Go back to standing twelve hours on your feet carrying plates for ungrateful tourists who snap their fingers at you?"
"It was my life," I whispered defensively.
"It was a trap," Dante corrected sharply. "You are too smart, too observant, and far too brave to spend the rest of your life serving pasta to rich men who don't even know your name."
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a sleek, black leather folder, holding it out toward me.
"What is this?" I asked, looking down at it.
"Julian Vance’s former position as head of administrative logistics at Moretti Enterprises is vacant," Dante said smoothly. "A starting salary of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually. Full medical, complete security detail, and a penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan."
I stared at him in utter disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? I don't know the first thing about corporate logistics! I dropped out of community college after one semester!"
"You know how to survive," Dante said, his gaze intensifying. "You know how to listen when others think no one is paying attention. And above all else, you proved you have the courage to pull someone out of the fire when the world is collapsing around them."

"I can't accept this," I stammered, stepping back. "This is crazy. This is a mafia front!"
"It’s a legitimate holding company with very profitable subsidiaries," Dante smiled faintly—a rare, dangerous expression that made him look remarkably human. "Think about it, Cara. You can run back to your old life and spend every night wondering if one of Vanessa’s remaining loyalists will come looking for the waitress who ruined their plans. Or... you can step into the fire and take control of your own destiny."
