Chapter 4 - The Poisoned LedgerThree weeks passed like a slow execution.

Dominic kept his word. My brother Noah’s university tuition suddenly required “special clearance,” my father’s bookie creditors started circling like sharks again, and my movements outside the Lake Forest gates were monitored by two armed guards who pretended to be landscapers.
I was trapped. But a caged animal doesn't stop planning its escape; it just sharpens its teeth.
If Dominic wanted to play warden, I would play the model prisoner while secretly dismantling his empire from the inside out.
For eight months, I had played the quiet housewife, but what Dominic didn't know was that bookkeeping was my actual superpower. Before my mother died, she had taught me corporate forensic accounting. While Dominic sat in his study reviewing syndication logs, I had spent months quietly organizing the household accounts on an encrypted tablet—including a secondary hidden ledger detailing the shadow shell companies Dominic used to wash construction funds through the city.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Dominic was downtown meeting with city inspectors, I unlocked his private mahogany desk drawer using a paperclip and my knowledge of his mother’s birthday.
Inside sat the original physical ledger—the master book containing every dirty secret, bribe, and offshore account belonging to the Russo syndicate.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I flipped through the pages. There was my father’s original signature next to the half-million-dollar debt. There were signatures of city aldermen, police captains, and federal judges.
And right beneath a column of shell company transactions, I found something even better: proof that Dominic’s own consigliere, Paul Moretti, had been quietly skimming millions from the Chicago waterfront docks and framing Adrian Cross’s syndicate for the theft to provoke a full-scale gang war.
Dominic wasn't just cold; he was being manipulated by his own inner circle, and he was too arrogant to see it.
I pulled my phone out, snapped high-resolution photos of every critical page, and encrypted the files into a secure cloud folder.
Before I could slide the ledger back into the drawer, the front door downstairs slammed shut.
Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed up the marble staircase.
Panic seized my chest. I slammed the desk drawer shut, grabbed my tablet, and dove behind the heavy velvet drapes of the study’s floor-to-ceiling window just as the study door swung open.
Dominic walked in, breathing heavily, tossing his suit jacket onto the leather couch. He looked furious—not the cool, controlled mob boss I was used to, but a man pushed to his absolute breaking point.
“Claire!” Dominic barked, looking around the empty room. When I didn't answer, he muttered a curse under his breath and walked over to his desk.
I held my breath behind the curtain, pressing my back flat against the cold glass window.
Dominic opened the top drawer, his fingers instantly sensing that the master ledger had been shifted a quarter of an inch.
A heavy, dead silence filled the study.
I heard the slow, deliberate rustle of pages being checked. Then, Dominic’s low, dangerous voice cut through the quiet room.
“I know you’re in here, Claire,” Dominic said calmly, his eyes fixed on the empty space ahead. “You always smell like jasmine when you’re standing too close to the drapes.”
My stomach dropped. I slowly stepped out from behind the curtain, clutching my tablet behind my back.
Dominic was sitting behind his mahogany desk, staring at me with eyes so dark they looked black.
“Did you find what you were looking for?” he asked quietly.
“I found out that your own consigliere is robbing you blind while you’re busy playing prison warden with me,” I fired back, deciding that offense was my only defense. I threw my tablet onto his desk, displaying the photographed pages of Paul Moretti’s embezzlement scheme.
Dominic didn't even glance at the screen. He just kept his eyes locked on mine.
“Paul has been loyal to me for fifteen years,” Dominic said flatly.
“Paul is a thief, and you’re too blind to notice because you’re too busy trying to break my spirit!” I stepped forward, slamming my hands onto his desk. “Look at the numbers, Dominic! He’s setting you up for a war with Adrian Cross so he can inherit the ruins!”
Dominic stood up slowly, towering over me. For a second, I thought he was going to strike me, or lock me in the basement, or worse.

Instead, he reached out, his warm fingers gently catching a stray lock of my hair and tucking it behind my ear. His touch was so tender, so unexpected, that it made me shudder.
“If those files are real,” Dominic whispered softly against my hair, “then my entire life is built on a lie. And if you’re lying to me to protect Adrian Cross... I will burn Chicago to the ground to get you back.”
