Chapter 3 - The Ghost Who Came BackElena stared at Daniel for five agonizing seconds before she slowly lowered her gaze back to the vanity desk.

Her fingers, shaking so badly they felt like broken twigs, reached into the thick manila envelope and pulled out the final piece of paper. It wasn't a handwritten letter this time. It was an official police report issued by the Chicago Police Department, dated four days ago.

Across the top header, bold black letters stared back at her: HOMICIDE DIVISION – CASE FILE #8842-B.

Elena’s eyes raced down the lines of sterile police jargon:

‘Victim identified as Peter Vance, 43, residing under the alias Paul Miller... Deceased sustained multiple blunt-force trauma injuries and a single gunshot wound to the chest... Body recovered in an abandoned warehouse district in South Chicago...’

The paper slipped from her fingers, fluttering down to land softly among the scattered photographs.

Elena couldn't breathe. The room spun wildly around her. She grabbed the edge of the vanity table to keep from collapsing, her chest heaving as a suffocating wave of shock and horror crashed over her.

“He’s... he’s dead?” she whispered, her voice hollow, devoid of any human emotion. “Peter is... actually dead this time?”

“They found him four days ago,” Daniel said, his voice cracking as he walked slowly toward her, stopping a few feet away, respecting the invisible perimeter of her fury. “The men he ran from caught up with him. Apparently, he tried to skim money from them a second time under his new identity. They tracked him down, tortured him for three days, and finished what they started six years ago.”

Elena let out a short, hysterical laugh that sounded more like a sob.

“So let me get this straight,” she said, her voice rising in pitch, dripping with bitter, corrosive irony. “Six years ago, my husband fakes his death to escape killers, leaving me behind in a living hell of grief. His best friend—the man who supposedly loved me—helps him pull off the deception, watches me mourn for half a decade, slowly seduces me, marries me today... and now I find out Peter is actually dead for real, just in time for my wedding night?”

She turned on Daniel, her eyes blazing with a fury so intense it felt physical.

“Is this some kind of sick joke to you two?! Were you competing for the prize, Daniel? Did you win me in a rigged game?!”

“No! Never!” Daniel cried out, dropping to his knees right in front of her chair, grabbing her hands despite her violent attempts to pull away. Tears streamed freely down his face, carving tracks through his skin. “Elena, I swear to God, I never wanted this! When Peter came to me six years ago, I fought him. I told him he was destroying you! But he made me swear on my mother’s grave that I would protect you if anything happened to him. And as the months passed... as I watched you destroy yourself in that empty house... I fell in love with you, Elena. Not because you were Peter’s wife, but because of your strength, your kindness, your soul.”

He pressed his forehead against her knees, his shoulders shaking with wretched sobs.

“I hated myself every single day for keeping the secret. Every time you kissed me, every time you smiled, I felt like a monster. But I was terrified that if I told you the truth, you’d hate me, you’d leave me, and I’d lose the only real thing I ever had.”

Elena looked down at the man kneeling before her—the man she had called her husband less than twelve hours ago. Her heart was a shattered landscape of jagged glass. Every memory of the past six years—every grocery bag he carried, every driveway he shoveled, every warm hug in the dark—was suddenly poisoned, re-contextualized through the lens of a colossal, calculated betrayal.

Yet, beneath the rage, beneath the overwhelming nausea, something else began to stir in the silence.

The danger hadn't ended with Peter’s murder in Chicago.
