Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire

Chaos erupted in the grand ballroom within seconds. High-society donors scrambled toward the exits like rats fleeing a sinking ship, champagne flutes shattering against the marble floor, while reporters fought past security guards to snap frantic photographs of the cascading data screens.
My father stood frozen in the center of the chaos, his hands trembling as federal marshals surrounded him, their heavy zip-ties clicking into place around his wrists.
"This is a mistake!" my father roared, his voice cracking with desperate authority as he glared back at me and Claire through the gathering crowd. "Julian! You ungrateful bastard! I built this empire for you! You're nothing without my name!"
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply stood straight, my arm securely around Claire's waist, and watched the man who had terrorized my entire life finally get swallowed up by the consequences of his own cruelty.
"My name is Julian Vale," I said loudly enough for him to hear over the din of the panicked crowd. "And I'm finally free of yours."
As the marshals escorted my father out through the service doors in handcuffs, my mother collapsed onto a velvet chair in weeping hysterics, utterly abandoned by the social vultures she had spent her life cultivating.
Within forty-eight hours, the federal government seized all assets of Vance Holdings. Accounts were frozen, subsidiaries were liquidated, and federal prosecutors announced an expansive criminal investigation into decades of corporate fraud, bribery, and obstruction of justice. The media dubbed it the financial scandal of the century.
And in the eye of the hurricane, Claire and I sat quietly in the kitchen of our downtown townhouse, drinking black coffee as morning sunlight streamed through the windows.
The television in the background was broadcasting breaking news updates about the collapse of the Vance dynasty, but neither of us was watching.
Claire traced the rim of her coffee mug, a quiet, contemplative expression resting on her face. The tension that had defined her posture for the past three years—the relentless, driving weight of a vendetta—seemed to have finally lifted, leaving behind a profound, peaceful stillness.
"It's over," I said softly, reaching across the table to cover her hand with mine. "The accounts are frozen. The foundation is dismantled. My father will spend the rest of his life behind bars."
Claire looked up, meeting my eyes with a soft, genuine smile that had nothing to do with contracts or revenge.
"My father's name has been cleared," she whispered, a single tear slipping down her cheek before she smiled through it. "He won't ever remember what happened, Julian... but somewhere inside, I think he knows."
"And us?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat as I realized the twelve-month contract we had signed was now entirely irrelevant. "What happens to us now, Claire? Our fake marriage is front-page news, the company is gone, and we have nothing left to hide behind."
Claire slid her hand out from under mine, stood up slowly, and walked around the table. Instead of pulling away, she stepped right into my space, wrapping her arms around my neck with a familiar, effortless warmth.
"Well," she whispered against my lips, a playful spark returning to her dark eyes. "Technically, our legal contract stipulates a full twelve-month trial period before we can discuss divorce proceedings."
May you like
I laughed, pulling her tight against my chest, feeling the heavy armor of my past finally fall away for good.
"Then I guess," I murmured, "we’re just going to have to break the contract."
