Chapter 6 - Ashes of an EmpireBy evening, the media had descended upon the Sterling Tower like a swarm of locusts. News helicopters buzzed outside the floor-to-ceiling windows while financial anchors breathlessly reported on the collapse of the city’s most untouchable corporate dynasty.

I sat alone at the massive executive desk in my father’s former office, staring out at the twinkling lights of Chicago. The room felt different now—no longer a cage, but a blank canvas.
The door opened softly.
Claire walked in, carrying two cups of hot black coffee from the office kitchenette. She wore a simple black turtleneck and trousers, having finally discarded the high-society emerald dress.
"The federal prosecutors finished the preliminary asset freezing orders," Claire said, setting a cup on the desk before me and leaning against the glass edge. "Your father’s personal accounts are locked. The shipping fleet is under federal receivership. And the trust funds... well, legally, since you transferred voting control to your primary spouse under the pre-nup rider, the core holdings are currently protected under my emergency receivership trust."
I looked up at her, a tired smile touching my lips. "Which means technically, you are now one of the wealthiest women in Illinois."
"Technically," she smiled back, taking a sip of her coffee. "Though I think my barista days prepared me much better for corporate crisis management than this mahogany desk ever will."
I reached out, placing my hand over hers on the cold glass surface. The skin where my wedding ring sat felt warm and real.
"So," I murmured quietly. "What happens to our fake marriage now that the real war is over?"
Claire’s dark eyes softened. She didn't pull her hand away.
"Who said anything about a fake marriage?" she asked softly. "We signed a legal contract, Julian. And in the state of Illinois, breaking a twelve-month contract before the expiration date incurs severe financial penalties."
I laughed—a real, genuine laugh that lifted ten years of accumulated anxiety off my shoulders.
"Is that right? What kind of penalties?"
May you like
"Mandatory cohabitation," she whispered, leaning closer, "indefinite coffee dates, and zero possibility of parole."
I pulled her into my arms, burying my face in her hair as the lights of Chicago stretched out beneath us like a galaxy of stars waiting to be rewritten.
