Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushThe evidence laid out in Jonathan’s vault was not just damning; it was an atomic bomb waiting to detonate across the corporate landscape of the city.

Over the next forty-eight hours, Jonathan and I worked in secure isolation inside the penthouse office, reviewing encrypted bank transfers, audio confessions from dying conspirators, and signed affidavits proving that the current CEO of Sterling Global Logistics—a ruthless billionaire named Harrison Vance—was the mastermind behind the fire that killed my parents.
Harrison Vance. The very man who frequently appeared on financial news channels, celebrated as a philanthropist and corporate visionary.
“He has a shareholder gala this Friday night at the Grand Meridian Hotel,” Jonathan said, pointing to an engraved invitation recovered from Carl’s metal box. “Every major board member, federal prosecutor, and media mogul in the state will be in attendance. It’s the annual anniversary of Sterling Global’s public expansion—the exact day Carl was supposed to expose them, twenty-two years ago.”
I looked at my reflection in the office window. The frightened, grieving volunteer who had worn a plain white T-year-old T-shirt to a deathbed wedding was gone. In her place stood a woman forged in fire, grief, and unyielding resolve.
“We aren't going to hand this over to the police quietly,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and absolute. “We are going to walk right through the front doors of that gala.”
On Friday evening, the Grand Meridian Hotel shimmered beneath a canopy of crystal chandeliers and flashing camera lights. Wealthy elites in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos mingled over champagne, entirely unaware that the ghost of their corporate sins was about to crash the party.
I wore a sleek, midnight-black evening gown—paid for out of Carl’s emergency accounts—with my hair swept back into an elegant chignon. Jonathan walked beside me, his briefcase handcuffed securely to his wrist, acting as legal counsel and protector.
As we stepped past the velvet ropes and entered the opulent ballroom, the string quartet played softly in the background.
On the raised stage at the front of the room, Harrison Vance stood behind a golden microphone, basking in the applause of the adoring crowd as he finished his keynote speech celebrating two decades of unbroken corporate dominance.
“...and as we look back on twenty years of unprecedented growth,” Harrison proclaimed, raising a crystal glass of champagne, “we remember those who laid the foundation of Sterling Global, and we look forward to an even brighter future—”
“I object to your definition of foundation, Harrison,” my voice rang out.
It wasn't a shout, but the amplification of the ballroom's wireless microphone system—which Jonathan had smoothly patched into via audio override—carried my words with terrifying clarity to every corner of the room.
The music cut off instantly. Heads snapped around in shock.
Harrison Vance froze on stage, his champagne glass hovering mid-air, his eyes scanning the crowd until they locked directly onto me standing by the grand entrance.
I didn't cower. I walked slowly, deliberately down the center aisle, every step echoing rhythmically against the marble floor.

“Who are you? Security, remove this woman—” Harrison stammered, his face turning an unhealthy shade of pale gray as he recognized something familiar in my eyes.
“My name is Evelyn Miller-Sterling,” I announced into the microphone, stepping right up to the base of the stage. “And I am the daughter of the man you murdered twenty-two years ago, and the legal wife of the man you failed to burn alive.”
