Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE OF STERLING-VANCE"What the hell is happening?" Richard screamed, spinning around as his men scrambled toward the shrinking gap of the vault entrance.

Arthur Miller didn't hesitate. He tackled Richard’s lead gunman to the polished floor, sending the suppressed pistol skittering across the marble. I lunged forward, grabbing the leather binder containing the master stock certificates and the encrypted flash drive, shoving them deep into my purse.

"The silent panic button!" Miller yelled over the deafening roar of the security alarm, wrestling the gunman’s arms behind his back. "Julian installed a secondary security Override in Safe 409! It locks down the entire subterranean floor!"

Panic broke out in the vault corridor. Richard Vance scrambled toward the narrowing three-foot gap of the main vault door, shoving Sarah out of his way in his desperate bid to escape being trapped inside.

"Wait for me!" Sarah shrieked, stumbling over her heels as she tried to squeeze through the closing steel jaws.

Richard slipped through the gap just before the massive steel door sealed shut with a heavy, pneumatic THUD, locking Sarah, Richard’s second gunman, Miller, and me inside the secure chamber!

"No! No! Open it!" Sarah screamed, pounding her fists violently against the ten-ton door. "Richard! Don't leave me!"

The second gunman raised his weapon in blind panic, pointing it at my head. "Give me the override code! Give me the code or I’ll blow your brains out!"

"There is no override code from inside," Miller said calmly, standing up from the floor, holding the first gunman’s dropped weapon. "This vault is an airtight, reinforced panic room built specifically for Julian Sterling. The air filtration system will run for forty-eight hours. The federal tactical response team was alerted the moment Clara turned the key."

The gunman stared at Miller’s weapon, his hands shaking violently before he slowly dropped his gun onto the floor, holding his hands in the air.

Sarah collapsed against the steel door, weeping hysterically, realizing she had been abandoned by the very man she had betrayed me for.

I walked over to her, looking down at her with a quiet, profound sadness.

"He never cared about you, Sarah," I said softly. "To men like Richard Vance, everyone is disposable."

Outside the vault, through the heavy bulletproof glass viewing window, we saw the flashing blue lights of federal law enforcement units swarming the outer bank lobby. Richard Vance was spotted trying to flee through the service exit, but two tactical officers slammed him against the glass wall, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Through the thick reinforced glass, Richard’s eyes locked onto mine. His face was twisted in silent, impotent rage as he was dragged away by federal agents.

Twenty minutes later, the emergency release protocol was initiated from the outside by federal authorities. The massive steel door swung open, revealing a dozen armed federal officers, accompanied by the chief prosecutor of the state's organized crime unit.

Arthur Miller stepped out first, handing the encrypted flash drive to the lead prosecutor.

"Inside this drive," Miller declared clearly, "is thirty years of financial records, offshore wire transfers, and the original audio recordings proving Richard Vance commissioned the murder of David Vance."

The prosecutor took the drive, nodding solemnly. "We have enough here to freeze every asset Richard Vance controls and keep him behind bars for the rest of his life."

He turned to me, offering a respectful nod. "Mrs. Sterling... your father’s murder case has officially been reopened. Justice will finally be served."

I stepped out of the vault into the bright morning light of the bank lobby, holding my purse tightly against my chest.

The battle for my life had ended, but the battle for my family’s legacy was just beginning.
