Chapter 4 - THE BETRAYAL WITHINMy breath hitched. The blood drained from my face so fast I thought I might faint.

"Sarah?" I whispered, staring at the woman I had shared meals with, confided in, and trusted for over three years. "What... what are you doing with him?"

Sarah didn't look away, though a flicker of cold guilt passed across her features before she hardened her gaze.

"I'm sorry, Clara," Sarah said, her voice flat and devoid of warmth. "It was never personal. I've been on Richard’s payroll since the day you applied for the hospice program three years ago."

"You..." My voice cracked. "You set up my assignment with Carl?"

"Of course she did," Richard Vance chuckled, stepping forward into the light of the vault, his dark eyes gleaming with sadistic satisfaction. "Did you really think it was a coincidence that you were assigned to Julian Sterling’s house? Julian was clever, I’ll give him that. He hid from my private investigators for decades. But when his cancer reached stage four, he had to use his real medical records under an alias. Sarah spotted the physical description and flagged it for me."

Richard gestured toward the velvet box sitting inside the open vault.

"Julian thought he was playing chess with me," Richard sneered. "He thought by orchestrating a romantic little deathbed marriage, he could slip the shares directly to you. What he didn't realize is that Sarah was reporting every single move you made back to me."

"You knew about the marriage?" Miller demanded, stepping defensively in front of me.

"I knew Julian was planning something," Richard corrected smoothly. "I didn't stop the marriage because I needed Julian to die first. Under state probate law, if a newlywed spouse dies under... shall we say, suspicious circumstances, and the surviving spouse is implicated in financial fraud, the court freezes the estate indefinitely."

Richard pulled a sleek silver tablet from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the vault table.

"On that screen, Clara, is a pre-written confession," Richard said chillingly. "You will sign it. It states that you manipulated a dying, mentally incompetent man into a fraudulent marriage to steal his estate. In exchange, I will grant you a quiet settlement—five million dollars—and you will pack your bags, leave the country, and never return."

"And if I refuse?" I asked, my voice surprisingly steady despite the terror gripping my chest.

Richard leaned in close, his cold breath brushing against my cheek. "If you refuse, my friends here will make sure you and Mr. Miller never leave this vault. The bank manager has already been paid off. The security cameras have been looped. As far as the world is concerned, David Vance’s long-lost daughter disappeared into thin air, just like her father."

I looked at Sarah. "Sarah... you know me. You know who I am. How can you help a man who murdered my father?"

Sarah swallowed hard, looking down at her designer heels. "Five million dollars changes lives, Clara. I'm tired of living on a volunteer coordinator's salary."

"Money doesn't buy you back your soul, Sarah," I said quietly.

Richard checked his gold wristwatch impatiently. "Enough theatrical nonsense. Sign the screen, Clara. You have thirty seconds before my men make this very messy."

I looked down at the silver tablet. Then I looked at the gold key still clutched in my right hand.

I remembered Carl’s words in the letter: Fight for what is yours.

"I won't sign," I said, looking Richard dead in the eye.

Richard’s face twisted into an ugly, murderous scowl. "Kill the lawyer first," he barked to his armed men. "Let’s see how brave she is when his blood hits her shoes."

The lead guard raised his suppressed pistol, aiming it directly at Arthur Miller’s chest.

Before the guard could pull the trigger, a deafening alarm roared through the subterranean vault. High-intensity strobe lights flashed red against the cold steel walls, and the massive ten-ton vault door began to slide shut automatically with a heavy, mechanical hum!
