Chapter 4 - The Unseen VideoAt 6:00 PM that evening, I returned to Denver, walking into the quiet private room at Saint Jude’s Hospital.

Clara sat in a wheelchair by the window, watching the sunset over the Rocky Mountains. She wore a simple dark blue sweater, a white blanket resting over her casted left leg. Her dark hair was pinned back, her hazel eyes holding a quiet, unbroken dignity that made me feel smaller than dust.
I stood near the door, my hands flat at my sides, refusing to take a single step forward without her permission.
"Clara," I whispered, my voice breaking.
She didn't turn her head immediately. She kept her eyes on the golden light reflecting off the snow-capped peaks.
"Did you watch the second video, Ethan?" she asked softly, her tone calm, smooth, and devoid of anger.
"I didn't," I choked out, pulling my phone from my pocket, setting it flat on the bedside table. "You asked Marcus not to let me see it. I promised myself I would never disobey your wishes again."
Clara offered a tiny, bitter smile. She turned her wheelchair around to face me.
"Pick up the phone, Ethan," she said gently. "Watch it now. In front of me."
My fingers trembled as I unlocked the screen, opening the unsynced forty-second video file recorded inside the maintenance shed just minutes before the rescue team arrived.
I hit play.
The screen lit up with Clara's face. The storm was howling outside the wooden walls. She was shivering uncontrollably, her skin blue, her eyes barely open.
"Ethan," she whispered into the camera, her breath misting in the freezing air. "If they find me alive... I want you to know why I’m coming back."
She paused, taking a ragged, painful breath.
"I’m not coming back to be your wife. I’m not coming back to save your reputation or your company. I’m coming back because I deserve to live the life I built... without your shadow."
"I am giving you back your money, your mistress, and your empire. And I am taking my name."
The screen clicked to black.
I dropped flat onto my knees right on the floorboards beside her wheelchair. Tears spilled over my lashes, soaking into the knees of my trousers as I buried my face in my hands, sobbing openly in front of the woman I had destroyed.
"Clara... please," I wept, my voice raspy and broken. "Take the company... take every dollar... take the estates... just don't erase me... please..."

Clara looked down at me—the billionaire titan of New York real estate, kneeling on the floor, weeping for a second chance—and her hazel eyes held only a clear, quiet finality.
"The company is already mine, Ethan," Clara said softly, reaching out her hand to gently touch the top of my head one last time. "And you erased yourself four days ago."
