Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Eleven YearsThe private waiting wing on the fourth floor of Saint Jude’s Hospital in Denver was silent, save for the rhythmic chime of the telemetry monitors echoing down the carpeted hallway.

I sat on a low leather bench outside ICU Suite 402. My eight-thousand-dollar suit was rumpled, my dark hair disheveled, my eyes bloodshot and swollen. I hadn't slept in thirty-six hours.

At 2:00 AM, the heavy oak doors of the suite opened.

Out walked Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International and Clara’s personal legal counsel for the last seven years. Beside her walked Dr. Rebecca Hayes, the chief of critical care.

I bolted up from the bench so fast my chair clicked against the wall. "Bridget! Doctor! How is she?!"

Dr. Hayes looked at me with an unyielding professional severity. "Mrs. Black’s internal body temperature has stabilized to ninety-seven degrees. The compound fracture in her left tibia has been surgically set, and we have treated her stage-two frostbite. She is conscious, but she has explicitly requested that you do not enter her room."

"I need to talk to her!" I pleaded, stepping forward, reaching for the door handle. "She needs to hear me explain—"

CRACK!

Bridget Colton slammed her leather briefcase flat against the door frame, blocking my hand with absolute authority.

"She doesn't need your explanations, Ethan," Bridget said, her sharp blue eyes flashing like cold steel. "She needs your signature."

Bridget unzipped her briefcase, pulling out three thick, red-sealed leather binders, sliding them flat onto the wooden waiting room table:

THE DIVISION OF ESTATE: Certified court filings establishing that fifty-one percent of Black Real Estate Capital was originally funded by Clara’s late father, Arthur Bennett, under an irrevocable prenuptial trust that unlocks upon proof of marital infidelities.

THE EMPIRE AUDIT: Detailed ledgers proving I had used $14.2 million in marital trust capital over eight months to fund Sophia Lane's fashion label, her Manhattan penthouse, and luxury trips to Rome, Miami, and the Maldives.

THE DIVORCE PETITION: Signed by Clara forty-eight hours before the avalanche hit her cabin.

My breath caught in my throat like a lump of dry ash. "What... what is this?"

"This is the reality you built while your phone was turned off, Ethan," Bridget declared coldly. "Clara didn't go to Colorado just to think about your affair. She went there to complete the audit of your company's foundation. She discovered that Sophia’s father, Donald Lane, has been using your offshore accounts to launder stolen commercial debts."

My stomach dropped into an icy void. "Donald Lane...?"

"Look at page nine," Bridget commanded flatly.

I flipped the page. Intercepted emails and wire logs met my eyes:

Sophia hadn't loved me. She had spent eight months executing a systematic corporate honey-trap, orchestrated by her father, to funnel Black Capital’s liquid assets into shell banks in Panama before my institutional investors noticed.

And Clara had known. She had discovered the entire scheme three weeks ago, travel plans, forged deeds, and offshore routes, and had gone to the Colorado cabin to secure the final physical ledgers before handing them to federal prosecutors.

She had gone into the storm to save the very empire I had abandoned her to enjoy.
