Chapter 5 - The Architect of War

The first light of dawn crept through the dusty skylight, casting long, sharp shadows across the workshop as we mapped out the final phase of our counter-attack.

Alessandro stood over the workbench, tracing the lines of the schematic I had drawn of Uncle Victor’s fortified compound on the North Shore. Maso was busy checking the ammunition counts of three tactical Go-bags he had retrieved from his car, while Leah monitored Camila’s IV drip in the corner, ensuring the girl was stable enough to travel.

—Victor thinks he has won, —Alessandro explained, his fingers tapping against the edge of the workbench. —He believes I’m stranded in Zurich and that Camila is dead or captured. Tonight, at midnight, he’s hosting an emergency council gala at his estate to force my captains to sign a loyalty oath transferring full control of the syndicate over to him.

—And that’s when we crash the party, —I said, sliding my father’s heavy jeweler’s loupe into my pocket alongside a small, razor-sharp engraving burr.

Alessandro looked up, his dark eyes flashing with a mixture of fierce pride and deep apprehension. —Adriana, no. You’ve already done more than enough. You decrypted the ledger, you sheltered Camila, and you kept this operation alive. This next part is a war zone. I am not letting you walk into Victor’s crosshairs.

—I am not asking for your permission, Alessandro, —I snapped, stepping right into his space, forcing him to look down at me as an equal. —Your uncle blew up my father’s shop. He threatened a fourteen-year-old boy. And he turned my life into a prison built on lies. This isn't just your war anymore. It’s mine.

Maso let out a low whistle from across the room. —Boss, I hate to say it, but the Signora has a point. If she walks into that gala holding the unencrypted master ledger on a secure thumb drive, the captains will see the proof of Victor’s treason with their own eyes. They won't have to take your word for it.

Alessandro stared at me for a long, silent moment, searching my face for any sign of hesitation. Finding none, a slow, grim smile touched the corners of his mouth—the same dangerous smile I had fallen in love with years ago before the blood and the shadows took over our lives.

—God help anyone who stands in your way, —he whispered.

By ten o’clock that night, the plan was locked in motion.

Leah had safely smuggled Camila and her brother Leo—whom Maso’s extraction team had quietly pulled out of a safehouse two hours prior—into a secure medical retreat in Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, a black armored Cadillac bearing the crest of the Marino inner circle pulled out of the garage beneath my father’s old shop, carrying three passengers straight toward the North Shore estate where Uncle Victor was preparing to sign away my husband’s empire.
