Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost HeiressesThe grand foyer of the Blackwood mansion was suffocatingly quiet.

Within twenty minutes of my radio call, two state child-protection investigators arrived alongside our precinct's lead detective, Bridget Colton. The twin girls were placed under emergency protective custody, tucked safely into a warm private room upstairs under the care of a certified pediatric nurse.
Jennifer Sterling-Blackwood sat on a plush velvet sofa in the main drawing room, flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys who had arrived in separate luxury sedans. Her silk robe had been replaced by a sharp grey designer suit, but her hands were still shaking as she tried to sip a cup of tea.
Bridget Colton opened a thick leather binder, sliding high-definition digital ledgers and legal dossiers flat onto the glass coffee table before Jennifer and her attorneys.
"Let's skip the theatrical pretenses, Jennifer," Bridget announced flatly, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical satisfaction. "The digital forensic audit of the Blackwood Family Trust is complete."
Jennifer’s lead attorney stepped forward. "Detective Colton, my client maintains that the children wandered off through a side security gate while she was asleep—"
"Your client drove a 2026 Range Rover to Hartley's Grocery at 10:14 P.M.," I interrupted, stepping out from the shadows of the doorway, my uniform immaculate, my silver badge catching the chandelier light. "We pulled the traffic camera footage forty minutes ago. We have high-definition video of Jennifer unbuckling Emily and Sarah, leading them behind the dumpster alcove, and driving away alone."
Jennifer’s jaw locked. She looked away, refusing to meet my eyes.
Bridget tapped the digital ledgers:
THE TWENTY-MILLION-DOLLAR TRUST: Under the terms of the late Caroline Blackwood's will (Robert's first wife), Emily and Sarah were sole beneficiaries of a $20 million independent real estate trust that activated on their fourth birthday.
THE STEP-MOTHER CLAUSE: If both children were declared deceased or permanently missing before their fourth birthday, 100% of the trust equity reverted automatically to the surviving legal stepmother.
THE FORGED MEDICAL DOSSIER: Evidence proving Jennifer had secretly hired a private physician to write medical reports claiming the twins suffered from severe sleepwalking disorders, creating a pre-packaged cover story for their disappearance in the freezing snow.
"You didn't just abandon them, Jennifer," I spoke softly, stepping closer to the sofa, my voice falling like a block of iron. "You wanted the cold to finish what your legal team couldn't buy."
Jennifer thrashed her head around, her dark eyes flashing with pure, hysterical malice. "THEY ARE NOT MY CHILDREN!" she shrieked, dropping all pretense of high-society elegance. "THEIR MOTHER LEFT THEM A FORTUNE WHILE I WAS TREATED LIKE A PAID GOVERNESS! ROBERT WOULD HAVE GIVEN THEM EVERYTHING!"
"And now," Detective Bridget Colton declared deadpan, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt, "you get nothing."
