Chapter 4 - The Reunion of TruthI staggered forward across the soft rug, tears streaming silently down my face, my hands reaching out as if reaching for a ghost.

"Mom...?" I choked out, my voice breaking into a ragged, heartbroken thread.
Margaret stood up from her armchair, dropping her cup onto the table, running toward me with her arms wide open.
We collided in the center of the room, her warm, familiar scent of lavender and rain washing over my senses, erasing six years of cold, lonely nightmare nights in broken apartments.
"My baby... my sweet baby girl..." Margaret wept, burying her face in my shoulder, holding me so tightly I could feel her heartbeat hammering against her ribs. "I'm so sorry, Elena... I'm so sorry I had to leave you in the dark!"
I collapsed onto my knees on the rug, holding my mother against my chest, sobbing uncontrollably while Adrian stood near the elevator doors, watching us with a quiet, solemn reverence.
For thirty minutes, the world outside—the guns, the alarms, Victor Vance, and the Las Vegas underground—faded into absolute silence.
As my sobs slowly quieted, Margaret helped me up to the sofa, holding my trembling hands between her warm palms.
"Six years ago," Margaret explained, her hazel eyes holding a deep, fierce clarity, "Victor discovered that I was transferring the Carter Trust shares to Adrian. Adrian’s father was my childhood friend—the original founder of Velvet Noir. When Victor tried to force me off the highway, Adrian’s team intercepted the crash site within three minutes."
"She was critically injured, Elena," Adrian spoke from the doorway, his voice low and steady. "Her heart stopped twice on the way to the surgical suite. To keep Victor from coming back to finish the job, we placed a unidentified casualty in the vehicle and staged her death."
"And me?" I asked softly, looking at my mother. "Why did you leave me in Texas?"
"Because Victor was watching you, sweetheart," Margaret whispered, wiping a tear from my cheek. "If I had taken you with me while I was in a coma, Victor would have hunted us both down. Adrian hid you under a protected trust, waiting until you turned twenty-four—the exact age required by your grandfather's estate to claim full executive authority over the Carter empire."

I turned my head, looking at Adrian.
The man I had thought was a dangerous, arrogant Mafia boss who bought women for two thousand dollars was the guardian who had spent six years protecting my life, holding my mother’s secrets, and building a fortress to restore my true home.
