Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost HeirsBy 6:00 AM, the blizzard had passed, leaving Chicago blanketed in a crisp, blinding white sunrise over Lake Michigan.

Inside my primary study, three miles of encrypted digital networks were glowing. Sitting across my broad mahogany desk was Chief Prosecutor Marcus Vance, alongside Bridget Colton, senior matrimonial and corporate litigator for Vance Global Capital.
In a soft velvet armchair beside the fireplace sat Clara, wrapped in a plush cashmere robe, holding her twin four-day-old daughters—whom we had named Hannah and Grace—safely against her chest. Both babies were healthy, their rosy cheeks blooming under warm milk and pediatric care.
Bridget Colton opened three thick leather binders bound by red seals, sliding a set of high-definition corporate land registries flat onto the mahogany desk.
"Elias, my dear," Bridget spoke softly, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional fury. "Julian Moretti believed that by forcing Clara into hiding three years ago, he had permanently severed her access to her father's estate."
I set my teacup down flat on the wood. "What estate?"
"The Arthur Vance Maritime Trust," Bridget revealed, tapping the second ledger. "It holds forty-two percent of the common voting stock in the Chicago Port Authority, along with sixty commercial real estate leases along the South River corridor—the very leases Julian Moretti has been using to run his off-ledger smuggling operations."
Marcus Vance pulled up a live server log on the wall display. "Under the 1998 Vance Family Trust Charter, those shares could only be claimed by a living direct descendant of Arthur Vance upon reaching twenty-five years of age—or upon the birth of legitimate heirs."
Clara looked up from her babies, her hazel eyes shining with sudden, breathtaking clarity. "I turned twenty-five two weeks ago... the day my daughters were born."
"Which is why Julian tried to murder you, Clara," I stated flatly, my eyes narrowing into razor-sharp slits. "If you and your twins died in that snowstorm behind my warehouse, Arthur's forty-two percent equity would have automatically defaulted to Julian’s corporate shell company under the abandonment clause."
I stood up from behind the desk, buttoning my dark bespoke suit jacket, towering over the study with an absolute, untouchable authority.

"Execute the trust activation, Bridget," I commanded flatly. "Revoke every commercial lease Julian Moretti holds along the river. Freeze his credit lines. And notify the Federal District Prosecutor that the rightful heirs of the Vance family have come home."
Bridget’s smile widened into a sharp, lethal line. "With pleasure, Don Elias."
