Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Frozen TrustBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Vance Logistics Tower in downtown Chicago was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark charcoal suits guarded every corridor. Inside the private medical wing adjoining the executive study, Clara lay in a plush velvet armchair, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a mug of hot chamomile tea while Dr. Rebecca Hayes monitored her recovery.
In the central executive study, sitting around a broad black granite conference table, were me, Bridget Colton, Marcus Vance, and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers, wiretap logs, and real estate charters flat onto the granite table before Clara and me:
"Elias, Clara," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Victor Vane, Vanessa Sterling, and the Vance-Bennett Heritage Trust is complete."
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Lake Michigan, my bespoke charcoal suit jacket off, my white shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal my broad, tattooed forearms, my gray eyes burning with an apocalyptic, predatory fire. "Explain it to us."
Bridget tapped the digital displays:
THE PREMEDITATED CAPTIVITY DOSSIER: Certified thermal surveillance logs and intercepted wiretaps proving Victor Vane and Vanessa Sterling held Clara Bennett-Vance captive for sixteen months in an illegal subterranean facility, systematically beating her to forge property transfers.
THE TWO-HUNDRED-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Victor Vane systematically diverted $200 million from Julian Vance’s late estate into offshore Panamanian shell accounts while framing Elias for the disappearance.
THE SOVEREIGN BLOODLINE CHARTER: Original probate deeds confirming that twenty-six-year-old Donna Clara Bennett-Vance and her newborn twins, Maya and Elena Vance, are sole sixty percent controlling common equity holders over the entire North American Maritime Logistics Network.
My jaw locked into unyielding granite.
Clara covered her face with her small, calloused hands, tears of profound relief and sixteen months of nightmare anguish spilling over her fingers.
"They whipped my back every time I refused to sign their papers, Elias," Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Vanessa laughed while Victor held the whip. They said nobody would ever come for a widow on the river."
I walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee right in front of Clara’s chair.

The feared Don who commanded Chicago’s underworld reached out, taking her trembling hands into my broad palms, looking into her eyes with eternal, unshakeable devotion.
"They built their luxury on your pain and my nieces' blood, Clara," I promised, my deep baritone an iron blade that shook the room. "Tomorrow morning at the Chicago Maritime Assembly... we give you and your daughters your empire."
