Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary on Gold CoastBy 1:30 AM, the convoy pulled through the wrought-iron security gates of a magnificent, historic limestone mansion located on Chicago’s prestigious Gold Coast overlooking Lake Michigan.

The Whitman Estate was a masterclass in quiet, timeless elegance—a four-story sanctuary featuring high arched ceilings, warm mahogany woodwork, roaring stone fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the dark, crashing waves of the lake.

A team of warm, professional staff members—led by a gentle, elderly housekeeper named Mrs. Gable—met us in the grand foyer, holding warm cashmere blankets, hot chamomile tea, and a freshly prepared nursery crib for Lyla.

"Oh, the sweet little darling!" Mrs. Gable cooed gently, taking Lyla into her warm arms as Lyla offered a sleepy, happy smile. "Don't you worry about a thing, my dear. The fourth-floor family suite is fully prepared, stocked with everything a nine-month-old angel could ever need."

I stood in the center of the warm marble foyer, my simple wool coat stained with rain, feeling an overwhelming, weightless sense of safety I hadn't felt in three long years.

Noah walked over, having removed his navy jacket, rolling his sleeves up to his elbows to reveal broad, toned forearms. He held two warm mugs of tea, handing one to me.

"Your friend in Chicago... the one whose guest room you were flying to?" Noah asked gently, leaning his hip against the carved wooden banister.

"Sarah," I answered, taking a slow sip of tea. "I called her from the car. She... she was terrified when I told her about the private investigator at the airport."

"I had Marcus send two private security officers to guard Sarah's apartment building for the night," Noah revealed smoothly. "Ryan's investigator will likely try to watch her place thinking you'll show up there tomorrow."

I looked at Noah, my hazel eyes wide with deep, unreserved awe. "Noah... why are you doing all of this for me? You don't know me. I'm just a stranger who fell asleep on your shoulder on a flight from Austin."

Noah smiled—a genuine, breathtaking look that lit up his severe, handsome features.

"You're not just a stranger, Emily," Noah murmured softly, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an absolute, unshakeable truth. "You are a mother who risked everything to protect her daughter. And in my book, that makes you the bravest person in this city."

Before I could answer, Marcus Vance walked into the foyer, his face drawn in a grim, sharp mask as he held his tablet.

"Mr. Whitman," Marcus interrupted. "We just intercepted an emergency filing in the Cook County Family Court. Ryan Collins’s lead attorney—Richard Sterling—just filed a petition for emergency ex-parte sole custody of Lyla Everly Collins, claiming abandonment and mental instability against Mrs. Collins."

My heart dropped like lead. "Richard Sterling...? He's the most ruthless corporate litigation shark in Texas!"

Noah didn't flinch. A razor-sharp, lethal smirk touched his lips.

"Call Bridget Colton," Noah commanded flatly.

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Bridget Colton? Senior Managing Partner of Colton & Vance International?"

"Tell Bridget she has a new client," Noah stated, his baritone dropping into a cold, absolute register. "And tell her to prepare for a total, uncompromising audit of Ryan Collins’s financial records by seven o'clock tomorrow morning."
