Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the JetbridgeThe rain hit us in a freezing, vertical curtain as we stepped out of the aircraft's secondary service door onto the metal staircase leading directly down to the O’Hare tarmac.

Marcus Vance held a heavy black umbrella over Lyla and me, shielding my baby from the bitter Midwest wind, while two armored black Cadillac Escalades stood idling thirty feet away on the wet concrete, their exhaust plumes rising into the autumn night.

"EMILY!" a loud, abrasive voice screamed from the upper glass walkway of the gate lounge above us.

I froze on the metal steps, my heart stopping in my chest.

Looking up through the rain-streaked glass of the terminal window above, I saw Gavin Vance—a fifty-two-year-old, silver-haired private investigator—pounding his heavy fist against the glass, holding an iPad displaying a Texas court order, surrounded by two panicked O’Hare airport police officers.

"EMILY COLLINS! STOP!" Gavin Vance's voice echoed through the external PA system of the gate area. "YOU ARE IN VIOLATION OF A TEXAS STATE CUSTODY ORDER! HAND THE CHILD OVER TO THE OFFICERS!"

Lyla woke up from the noise, letting out a small, startled cry. I pulled her tighter against my wool coat, my legs shaking so violently I nearly slipped on the wet stair tread.

Noah was beside me instantly. His broad arm wrapped securely around my waist, supporting my entire weight, shielding Lyla and me with his heavy wool coat.

"Ignore him, Emily," Noah commanded smoothly, his voice close to my ear, warm and unbothered. "Keep walking toward the lead vehicle."

Down on the tarmac, Gavin Vance’s two hired private transport officers came sprinting around the wheelwell of a baggage cart, holding high-powered flashlights and heavy leather badges.

"Hold it right there!" the lead transport officer yelled, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "We have an extradition warrant for kidnapping issued out of Travis County!"

Marcus Vance didn't even draw his weapon. He stepped between the transport officers and Noah's Escalade, pulling a sleek leather folder from his inner coat pocket and holding it two inches from the transport officer's face.

"I am Marcus Vance, Chief Security Director for Whitman Global," Marcus declared, his deep baritone carrying an absolute, terrifying legal authority. "The paper in your hand is a fraudulent ex-parte temporary order issued without jurisdiction over an interstate flight. Furthermore, you are currently standing on a restricted Federal Aviation Administration tarmac without federal clearance."

The transport officer blinked, his jaw sagging as he looked at the official Department of Homeland Security badges and federal marshal credentials Marcus was displaying.

"If you take one more step toward Mr. Whitman's private vehicle," Marcus added smoothly, "you will spend the next forty-eight hours in a federal holding cell facing charges of Interference with Commercial Aviation and Felony Extortion."

The two transport officers backed away instantly, turning off their flashlights, taking two frantic steps back toward the terminal wall.

Noah opened the door of the lead Escalade himself, helping me step inside the heated, leather-wrapped luxury cabin, before climbing in beside me and sliding the heavy, soundproof door shut.

The engine roared to life. The Escalade surged forward across the tarmac, leaving O’Hare Airport, Gavin Vance, and my ex-husband's desperate trap far behind in the freezing rain.

I collapsed against the plush leather seat, tears finally breaking free, streaming down my cheeks as I kissed Lyla’s soft forehead over and over again.

"We're safe, sweetie..." I sobbed softly. "We're safe..."

Noah leaned over, pulling a fresh linen handkerchief from his pocket and handing it to me with a soft, breathtaking smile.

"Welcome to Chicago, Emily," Noah whispered softly. "Now... let's deal with your ex-husband."
