Chapter 4 - Shattered Glass

The first sound was the heavy thud of Arthur Harper’s silver-headed cane slipping from his trembling grip and clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.

"What... what is this?" Arthur wheezed, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple as his knuckles whitened against the back of a velvet armchair. He stared up at the massive canvas, his aged eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing disbelief. "Daniel... Victoria... what am I looking at?"

Daniel let out a choked, strangled sound, lunging forward as if he could physically tackle the canvas and rip it off the easel. His face drained of all color until he looked like a corpse under fluorescent lights.

"Dad—it’s fake!" Daniel stammered, his voice cracking into a panicked, high-pitched octave. "It’s—it’s AI-generated! It’s a deepfake! Claire is losing her mind, she’s trying to sabotage us, Dad, don't look at it—!"

"Don't lie to your father, Daniel," I said sharply, my voice cutting through his frantic excuses like a razor blade. "The metadata is embedded in the high-res file. Timestamped, geotagged right to our master bedroom, and pulled straight from Victoria’s personal phone."

Victoria’s calculated composure shattered into a million jagged pieces. The mask of the sweet, supportive stepmother vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, venomous hatred. She spun around to face me, her hands trembling with rage.

"You psychotic bitch!" Victoria shrieked, lunging toward me with her fingernails bared like claws. "I’ll rip your throat out—"

She didn't even make it two steps.

Julianna caught her arm with surprising force, yanking Victoria back with a look of sheer horror and disgust on her face. "Get away from her, you disgusting snake! You're sleeping with my brother? My father’s wife is sleeping with my brother?!"

"Julianna, listen to me, it's not what it looks like—" Victoria panicked, her voice rising to a frantic, shrill shriek as she tried to claw her way out of the social humiliation.

"Shut up!" Arthur Harper roared. The sound didn't sound like an old man recovering from a stroke; it sounded like a wounded lion. He straightened up, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with a terrifying fury as he looked from his wife to his son.

Daniel stood frozen in the middle of the room, completely exposed, completely trapped, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He looked at his father, then at Victoria, and finally, desperately, at me.

"Claire... please," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking, tears of sheer panic welling in his eyes. "Let's talk about this in private. Please, don't do this to our family."

"Our family?" I laughed, a cold, sharp sound that made everyone in the room flinch. I walked over to the kitchen counter, picked up my leather briefcase, and unzipped it.

"There is no 'our family', Daniel," I said calmly, pulling out thick stacks of printed financial statements, bank transfers, and shell company deeds. "Not anymore. Because while you were busy playing the grieving son and the devoted husband, you and your lovely stepmother were systematically draining every single asset I brought into this marriage."

I tossed the first thick stack of papers right onto Arthur Harper’s lap.

"Over three hundred and twenty thousand dollars," I announced to the room, my voice ringing with absolute authority. "Siphoned from our joint accounts to fund Victoria’s condo in Miami, luxury shopping sprees, and secret loans. Funded by my architectural earnings, my inheritance, and the very savings you convinced me to pool together 'for the family's stability'."

Arthur’s shaking hands picked up the top paper, his eyes scanning the official bank routing numbers, the signatures, the wire transfers labeled 'Emergency Assistance' and 'Estate Repairs' going directly to Victoria’s private LLC.

The old man’s breath caught in his throat. He clutched his left chest, his face turning gray.

"Dad!" Daniel cried out, rushing toward his father.

"Get away from me!" Arthur shoved Daniel back with a sudden, violent burst of strength fueled by pure rage. He pointed a trembling, accusing finger at his son and his wife. "You... you parasitic vipers. You've been robbing me blind, and sleeping together under my own roof?!"

"Arthur, calm down, let me explain—" Victoria pleaded, her voice cracking as she tried to approach him, but Arthur raised his cane defensively, backing away from her as if she were a plague rat.

"Get out," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, icy finality. "Get out of my house. All of you. Get out before I call the police and have you both arrested for wire fraud and embezzlement."
