Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress CracksThe wind off the Chicago River suddenly felt like ice shards slicing through wool.

Maya stared at Nathan, the romantic haze of the evening shattering instantly under the grim, terrifying weight in his voice.

“What are you talking about?” she asked, her voice trembling as she pulled his coat tighter around herself. “Nathan, what’s on that phone?”

Nathan didn't answer immediately. He stared down at the glowing screen—which continued to flash a red, high-priority emergency alert—before slowly sliding it back into his breast pocket. He looked at Maya with an expression of such profound, agonizing guilt that it made her chest ache.

“That call was from my head of security,” Nathan said, his voice low and mechanical, as if he were reciting a death sentence. “Twenty minutes ago, a secure server at our downtown data center was breached. Forty-five million dollars in intellectual property—the core cloud architecture we’re using for the merger—was downloaded and routed to an external IP address.”

Maya blinked, her financial analyst brain trying to process the corporate disaster. “Breached? But our firewalls are military-grade. Who could bypass the encryption keys?”

“Only someone with executive-level clearance,” Nathan said bitterly. “Someone who had access to the master terminal in my private office.”

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The pieces clicked together with horrifying speed.

“Your office... but nobody has your security code except—” She stopped dead, her eyes widening in horror as she stared up at him. “Except me.”

Nathan didn’t look away. He didn't offer a reassuring smile or dismiss her fear. Instead, he took a step forward, his hands coming up to gently cup her face, his thumbs wiping away a tear she hadn't realized was falling.

“I know you didn't do it, Maya,” Nathan said fiercely, his voice vibrating with absolute conviction. “I would stake my entire empire on your innocence.”

“Then who—?”

“The board,” Nathan interrupted, his eyes flashing with dark, lethal fury. “My chief operating officer, Richard Vance, has been quietly shorting Northstar stock for six months, waiting for a hostile takeover by our primary competitor, Sterling Global. They needed a scandal to trigger a federal SEC investigation, freeze my assets, and force me out as CEO.”

He pulled her closer, burying his face in her hair.

“And they thought they could use you to do it,” Nathan whispered harshly against her temple. “They planted those transaction logs on your terminal this afternoon while you were in the breakroom. By tomorrow morning, the federal investigators will arrive at your desk with an arrest warrant for corporate espionage.”

The world spun violently on its axis.

Arrested? Corporate espionage? Prison?

Maya’s knees buckled, but Nathan caught her easily, lifting her slightly as he pulled her flush against his chest.

“No,” Maya sobbed, gripping the lapels of his suit jacket. “Nathan, I didn’t—I don't even know how to hack a server! If the SEC comes tomorrow, my life is over. Everything I’ve worked for—”

“Your life is not over,” Nathan interrupted, his voice dropping into a terrifying, commanding growl that left no room for argument. He pulled back, looking straight into her eyes with a fierce, unwavering intensity. “Because you are walking away from Northstar tonight. You are not going back to your apartment, and you are not talking to anyone.”

“What are you talking about? Where am I going?”

“To my estate in Lake Geneva,” Nathan said, opening the door of the black bulletproof Mercedes Maybach that had materialized silently beside the curb, its engine idling in the dark. Marcus, his towering head of security, stood holding the rear door open. “My men will secure your apartment, wipe your digital footprint, and intercept the SEC subpoenas before they ever hit your desk.”

Maya stared at the dark interior of the car, sheer panic warring with the absolute, blinding trust she felt for the man standing before her.

“And you?” she choked out. “What about you, Nathan? If you protect me, they’ll destroy you. They’ll say you’re an accomplice!”

Nathan offered a grim, lethal smile—the smile of a predator who had just decided to burn his own kingdom to the ground to protect what mattered.

May you like

“Let them try,” Nathan murmured, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead before gently lifting her into the back seat of the car. “I built this empire from nothing once, Maya. I can do it again. But I will not let them touch you.”

The heavy door closed with a solid thud, sealing her inside the armored sanctuary as the Maybach accelerated smoothly into the Chicago night, leaving Nathan standing alone under the flickering streetlamp, walking straight into the crosshairs of a corporate war.
