Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Hidden LedgerBy 2:00 AM, the Ferraro mansion was locked down under an absolute, ironclad security protocol.

Outside the gates, twelve black armored Escalades belonging to Vance Global Security patrolled the perimeter. Fifty elite private security officers in charcoal suits guarded every hallway, balcony, and driveway. Luca had summoned his chief security director, Marcus Vance, along with senior corporate legal counsel Bridget Colton.

Inside my suite, an IV drip of saline and nutrient boosters was gently hydrating my arm. The dizzy, dark fog was slowly lifting, replaced by a quiet, steady warmth.

Luca hadn't left my bedside. He sat in a high-backed velvet chair drawn up right against my mattress, his broad hand wrapping tightly around my cold fingers, refusing to let go even while reading through a thick leather folder Bridget Colton had placed on the bedside table.

"Read page four, Luca," Bridget Colton said softly, her sharp blue eyes holding a rare, profound gravity. "When you established the twenty-five thousand dollar monthly allowance for Nora eleven months ago, you assumed she was using it for personal luxury."

Luca opened the ledger. His eyes scanned the certified bank records:

THE CLARA BENNETT ENDOWMENT: Every single dollar—all $275,000 deposited into my account over eleven months—had been transferred directly to St. Bridget's Children's Hospital to fund pediatric cancer treatments for orphaned children.

THE PERSONAL EXPENSE LOG: My personal expenditures totaled less than $150 a month, used entirely for books, basic groceries, and bus passes.

THE BENNETT MARITIME TRUST: Original documents proving Clara Bennett was the orphaned daughter of Julian Bennett—Luca’s former business partner who had mysteriously died in a car crash three years ago.

Luca froze. His head snapped up, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle throbbed along his cheekbone.

"Julian's daughter...?" Luca rasped, his voice dipping into an icy, lethal register. "Clara is Julian Bennett's daughter?"

"Yes," Bridget Colton revealed, leaning forward over the table. "And the reason Clara was left in an unlisted orphan ward without financial support is because your underboss, Carlo Moretti, systematically buried Julian's estate records after the crash. Carlo intercepted Julian's maritime stock equity and diverted twenty million dollars into offshore Panamanian accounts."

A cold, terrifying silence descended over the bedroom.

Luca stood up from his chair. The vulnerable, heartbroken husband vanished, replaced in an instant by the lethal, unforgiving monarch of New York’s underworld.

"Carlo," Luca whispered, his storm-gray eyes burning with an absolute, apocalyptic fire. "Carlo knew Julian had a daughter... and he let her sit in a cancer ward while my wife bled to save her life."

"Carlo was also the one who called your phone at six o'clock tonight," Marcus Vance added grimly from the doorway. "He claimed there was a sudden emergency at the South Brooklyn docks to ensure you would miss Nora's birthday dinner."

Luca closed his eyes for three long seconds, taking a slow, deep breath of pure, lethal resolve.

When he opened them, he turned to face me, stepping back to the bed, leaning down to press a soft, desperate, reverent kiss against my forehead.

"Rest now, my sweet Nora," Luca murmured into my hair, his baritone an unshakeable promise. "Tomorrow morning... I clean my house."
