Chapter 2 - The Corporate AvalancheBy 2:00 PM, the celebration of their new beginning had turned into a tactical retreat. Daniel and Tessa had abandoned the seafood restaurant without touching the chocolate cake, fleeing to Tessa’s high-rise apartment in River North.

The moment they walked through the door, Daniel’s corporate phone began to ring. It wasn't personal friends anymore; it was the board of directors.

Daniel stared at the screen. Arthur Vance - Senior Partner.

He swiped to answer, his hand slick with sweat. "Arthur, listen to me, whatever you're seeing online—"

"Shut your mouth, Daniel," Arthur’s voice boomed through the speaker, cold, razor-sharp, and devoid of the joviality they had shared just yesterday over golf. "Effective immediately, the executive committee has placed you on indefinite administrative leave. Do not come to the office. Do not log into the server. Our corporate legal counsel is reviewing the financial disclosures Claire attached to her public post. If she proves you funneled firm capital into an extramarital enterprise, we aren't just firing you—we are pressing criminal charges."

The line went dead with a harsh click.

Daniel stood frozen in the middle of Tessa’s pristine, minimalist living room. He looked at Tessa, who was pacing back and forth near the floor-to-ceiling windows, her phone glued to her ear, her face pale.

"What do you mean you're pulling our account?" Tessa shouted into her phone, her voice cracking. "We have a signed contract! You can't just—hello? Hello?!" She lowered the phone slowly, her eyes wide with shock. "They dropped us. Apex Marketing just dropped our biggest commercial account. They said they won't be associated with corporate fraud."

The realization hit Daniel like a physical blow. Claire hadn't just exposed an affair; she had dismantled their entire socioeconomic foundation with surgical precision.

"How?" Tessa turned on him, her anger flaring hot and fast. "How did she get all of that? The expense reports? The texts? I thought you said you deleted our chat history!"

"I did!" Daniel shouted back, running his hands through his hair. "I cleared my cache every week! But... but Claire is a data analyst, Tessa. Before we got married, before I built the firm, she worked cybersecurity compliance for federal contractors. I was a fool to think I could outsmart her digital footprint."

"Well, smart or not, your little ex-wife just detonated our lives!" Tessa pointed an accusing finger at him. "Your firm is investigating you, my agency is losing clients, and my phone is blowing up with reporters from local real estate blogs asking if I was the mistress who helped embezzle funds!"

"Embezzle?" Daniel flinched. "It wasn't embezzlement, it was just aggressive reallocating—"

"Don't give me lawyer talk!" Tessa screamed, bursting into tears of pure frustration. "You promised me a clean break! You promised me everything was handled!"

Daniel looked at the woman he had chosen over twelve years of history. Just two hours ago, she had been the symbol of his liberation, exciting and ambitious. Now, under the harsh light of reality, she looked like a stranger who was calculating how fast she could jump off a sinking ship.

His phone buzzed again. It wasn't a call. It was a text from an unknown number with a Chicago area code.

Unknown: Mr. Vance. My name is Julian Reed. I am Claire’s legal counsel. We have filed an emergency motion to set aside today’s divorce settlement based on fraudulent financial concealment. I suggest you retain your own attorney immediately. You’re going to need one.

Daniel sat down heavily on the edge of Tessa’s designer sofa. The champagne had worn off completely, leaving behind a terrifying, sobering reality: the game was over, and Claire hadn't just won—she had rewritten the rules of the board.
