Chapter 6 - The Gala at the PlazaIn late September 2026, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Chicago was packed to absolute capacity for the inaugural Bennett Maritime & Maternal Health Gala.

Over five hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, federal prosecutors, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
Standing at the main presentation podium, wearing a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald silk evening gown that celebrated my tall, graceful figure, was me.
Around my neck hung my late mother's vintage pearl necklace, my dark hair falling in glossy waves over my shoulders, my hazel eyes burning with absolute, unshakeable victory, inner peace, and sovereign grace.
Beside the stage stood Bridget Colton, Lauren Mitchell, and my chief of private security, Marcus Vance—who had resigned from Vincent's firm four months earlier to lead my security network.
I adjusted the microphone, my clear, velvet baritone echoing cleanly through the high-fidelity speakers:
"One year ago, I sat alone at a restaurant table with a single candle and a white cake," I announced to the silent ballroom, my voice filled with deep, genuine pride. "And on that night, I learned that true royalty isn't inherited through marriage or power... it is claimed when a woman breaks her own chains and steps into her true light."
I held my champagne glass high under the glittering lights.
"To independence, truth, and unbroken freedom!"

"To Claire!" the entire room erupted into a warm, unanimous standing ovation, five hundred crystal glasses clinking together under the open sky.
Standing in the shadow of the rear balcony, uninvited and unnoticed by the crowd, stood Vincent Moretti. He wore a black tuxedo, his face gaunt, holding a single white orchid in his hand. He watched me from the dark, tears silently tracking down his face, realizing that the queen he had lost was now an unshakeable, sovereign monarch who would never need his shadow again.
