Chapter 2 - The Audit of the EmpireBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the sixty-story glass tower of Moretti Global Logistics in the heart of Chicago's financial district was surrounded by Federal Marshals and private auditors from Vance Security.

Vincent Moretti sat behind his massive mahogany desk on the top floor, his dark suit rumpled, his hair disheveled, dark circles hollowed beneath his bloodshot storm-gray eyes.

Beside him stood Sophia Reynolds, her face pale, weeping nervously as she clutched her son Oliver’s hand.

"Vincent, what is happening?!" Sophia whimpered, her voice tight with panic. "The bank just froze my father's accounts! They said there’s a federal injunction against our family trust!"

Vincent didn't look at her. He didn't even hear her. His eyes were glued to the double mahogany doors of his executive office.

BOOM!

The double doors were pushed wide open.

Walking down the long carpeted aisle, flanked by two armed Federal Marshals, Marcus Vance, and Bridget Colton, was me.

I wore an exquisite floor-length ivory cashmere coat over a tailored charcoal silk suit. My dark hair fell in glossy waves over my shoulders, and my posture was tall, unyielding, and sovereign. Down on my right hand rested a simple, magnificent ten-carat emerald signet ring—the original Seal of the Bennett Family Estate.

Sophia gasped, taking a quick step back behind Vincent's desk. "Claire...?"

Vincent stood up slowly, his hands trembling as he rested them against the mahogany surface. "Claire... please. Let the marshals wait outside. Just give me five minutes to explain—"

"You don't have five minutes, Vincent," Bridget Colton interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and dropping a thick stack of court orders onto the desk.

"As of seven o'clock this morning," Bridget announced, her clear voice ringing through the quiet office, "the Federal District Court has executed an Emergency Freeze and Judicial Receivership over Moretti Global Logistics. All fifty-five percent of Vincent Moretti's voting shares have been temporarily transferred to Mrs. Claire Bennett-Moretti pending criminal indictment for Forgery, Corporate Embezzlement, and Systemic Wire Fraud."

Vincent’s face drained of every drop of color, turning an ugly, paper-white shade of green.

"Voting shares...?" Vincent stammered, looking at me with a desperate, groveling terror. "Claire... I built this company! I spent ten years expanding these maritime lines!"

"You didn't build it, Vincent," I corrected flatly, taking a slow, deliberate step toward his desk. "You built it with my mother's sixty-five million dollars. You built it while letting her die in a public hospital ward because you refused to release her medical funds."

I turned my head slowly, locking my hazel eyes onto Sophia's terrified face.

"And you," I added, my voice dropping an octave into a cold, lethal register, "spent five years enjoying luxury suites, private schools for your son, and my husband's constant attention... paid for by the money your father stole from my family."

Sophia dropped to her knees beside the desk, weeping hysterical, frantic pleas. "Claire! I didn't know! My father told me it was a legitimate loan! Please... don't take Oliver's school fund!"

"Your father’s loan was a felony, Sophia," I replied deadpan. "And Oliver’s school fund is being repossessed by federal marshals before noon."
