Chapter 5 - The GambitThe war between the Callahan syndicate and the Shaw family reached its boiling point forty-eight hours later.

With Finn permanently exiled to an isolated family compound in Western Canada under heavy guard, Ronan took total control of the narrative. But Dominic Shaw wasn't going down quietly. Having lost his foothold in Callahan Development, Shaw initiated a hostile press campaign, leaking corrupted financial files to federal prosecutors while threatening Callahan assets across Illinois.
I sat at the grand dining table in the penthouse, surrounded by historical land deeds, corporate charters, and archivist files from the city’s records office.
Ronan walked in, shedding his tie, looking at the mountain of paper spread across his table. "What is all this?"
"This," I said, pointing a gold pen at a blueprinted map dated 1924, "is how you destroy Dominic Shaw without firing a single bullet."
Ronan raised an eyebrow, walking over to stand behind my chair, leaning down over my shoulder. "Explain."
"The Shaw family's primary asset isn't their shipping line," I explained, turning to look up at him. "It’s the private deep-water pier in South Chicago. They’ve operated under a ninety-nine-year commercial lease granted by the city in 1927. Everyone assumed they owned the land outright."
"They do," Ronan said. "My legal team checked."
"Your legal team checked current county records," I countered with a triumphant smile. "I went into the historical vault at the Society archives this morning under Viktor’s guard. The original 1927 charter contained a hidden reversionary clause: if the original leaseholder family fails to maintain active commercial rail access to the pier for three consecutive years, the land title automatically reverts to the city—and the adjacent property owner gets first right of purchase at the 1927 valuation."
Ronan stared at the map, then looked down at me, his sharp mind connecting the dots instantly.
"The Shaws tore down the old rail line in 2023 to build their luxury storage vaults," Ronan breathed, a brilliant, lethal smile slowly spreading across his handsome face. "Which means their lease expired six months ago."
"And who owns the adjacent swamp parcel to the north?" I asked, flashing him a dangerous grin.
"Callahan Enterprises," Ronan answered, his gray eyes flashing with raw, absolute delight.
He didn't look at the map anymore. He reached down, grabbing my chair, spinning it around to face him. He bent over, catching my face in both of his hands, and kissed me with a fierce, breathless passion that sent electric shocks straight to my core.
I wrapped my arms around his broad neck, pulling him down to me, kissing him back with everything I had. The archivist and the mafia lord, bound together in a high-stakes chess match for the soul of Chicago.
"You are incredible," Ronan growled against my lips, pulling back slightly, his breath heavy, his thumb tracing my jawline. "A genius in a cardigan."
"I told you," I laughed softly, tracing the line of his collarbone through his shirt. "I am not property. I am your partner."
May you like
Ronan’s eyes went dark, intense, and deeply emotional. He took my hand, pressing his lips firmly against my palm.
"Partner," Ronan agreed softly. "Tomorrow, we take what is ours."
