Chapter 2 - The Audit of the LeechesThe wine glass shattered against the tile, the sharp clink piercing the stunned silence of the service kitchen like breaking glass. Red liquid spread across the floor like a pool of fresh blood, soaking toward the tips of my mother’s expensive designer shoes.

Margaret’s jaw slackened, her carefully maintained facade of matriarchal authority cracking right down the middle. She took a stumbling step forward, her eyes darting between my freezing glare and the smartphone still broadcasting the crisp, professional voice of my CFO.
"Daniel... Daniel, what is the meaning of this?!" Margaret shrieked, her voice pitching upward into a hysterical screech. "You're freezing our accounts? Are you out of your mind? We are your family! We sacrificed everything to raise you, to put food on your table when your father passed away, and this—this ungrateful, worthless parasite of a wife you married has poisoned your mind against us!"
Emily flinched at the insult, pulling her hands slightly away from mine, but I held on firmly, refusing to let her shrink back into the shadows.
I slipped the phone back into my pocket, slowly turning to face the woman who had birthed me, yet had spent decades treating affection as a debt to be collected with interest.
"Sacrificed?" I repeated, my voice terrifyingly calm, carrying a weight that made even Michael take an involuntary step backward. "You mean when you convinced me to take out a high-interest second mortgage on my first apartment building to pay off Michael’s gambling debts? Or when you forced me to send half my college earnings to support Ashley’s endless string of failed boutique ventures?"
"That was family support!" Ashley sobbed from her corner, wiping mascara down her cheeks with trembling hands. "We were supposed to share everything! You're a multi-millionaire now, Daniel! You have three mansions, a fleet of luxury cars, and restaurants from New York to San Francisco! Why are you acting like a greedy, selfish monster over a few little expenses?!"
"A few little expenses?" I let out a harsh, humorless laugh.
I turned and walked past them into the main dining room, gesturing for them to follow. Like obedient, terrified dogs, they trailed behind me, stepping out of the humid service area and back into the breathtaking luxury of the grand dining hall.
The tables were still overflowing with untouched platters of imported caviar, seared A5 Wagyu beef, and colossal Maine lobsters. Empty bottles of Dom Pérignon littered the mahogany sideboard.
"Look around you," I said, sweeping my hand across the opulent room. "Do you know how much this single lunch cost? Four thousand dollars. Do you know how many lunches like this you've thrown over the last two years while I was flying across the country sleeping three hours a night?"
I pulled a thick leather-bound folder from my briefcase near the entrance and slammed it down onto the banquet table, scattering a plate of imported French cheeses.
"Over two point four million dollars," I said coldly, reading straight from the forensic accounting report my private investigators had quietly compiled over the past week before I even boarded my flight. "Two point four million dollars diverted from my primary venture capital account into your personal slush funds. Ashley, you bought a three-hundred-thousand-dollar vacation home in Cabo under a shell corporation. Michael, you purchased a fleet of custom sports cars registered under a fake logistics front. And you, Mother..."
I looked directly at Margaret, whose face had turned a sickly, mottled gray.
"...you’ve been drawing a monthly consulting salary of twenty-five thousand dollars from my restaurant group for a job that doesn't exist, while my wife—the woman who signed every early loan document with me and lived in a drafty basement so I could afford my first commercial oven—was down in the basement scrubbing your grease traps."
Margaret opened her mouth, stammering frantically, trying to find some shred of maternal manipulation that would work. "We... we only did it to secure your legacy! We were protecting your assets from her! You know women from her background, they only want—"
"Enough!"
The roar tore out of my throat, shaking the crystal chandelier overhead and instantly silencing every excuse in the room.
"Get out," I whispered, pointing a steady, unyielding finger toward the massive oak front doors of the mansion.
"Daniel, you can't be serious!" Michael protested, stepping forward with an aggressive scowl. "You can't kick your own flesh and blood out onto the street! We're family! We made you who you are!"
May you like
"No," I said, my voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying finality. "I made myself. You just tried to consume me. And as for my flesh and blood... you're looking at her."
I turned back toward the kitchen doorway, where Emily stood in the shadows, watching us with tears streaming down her pale face.
