Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the EstateBy afternoon, Adam had left the hospital in the capable hands of his medical team and driven straight to the sprawling, gated estate on the North Shore where he had grown up.

The iron gates parted automatically as his car approached, recognizing the license plate of the Carter family heir. He drove up the long, gravel driveway, parking his car right across the grand front steps, blocking the entrance.
He didn't bother knocking. He turned the heavy brass handle and pushed the oak doors open.
The interior of the mansion was a museum of wealth and cold perfection—marble floors, high vaulted ceilings, and priceless oil paintings hanging on the walls.
"Adam, darling?"
Eleanor’s voice drifted from the formal drawing room. She stepped out holding a delicate porcelain teacup, looking as pristine and unbothered as if she were hosting a charity brunch. But the moment she saw the dark, furious expression on her son’s face, her steps faltered.
"You're making a dreadful mistake coming here like this," Eleanor said, setting the teacup down on a nearby console table with a sharp click. "Where is your professional composure? You look hysterical."
"Hysterical?" Adam repeated, closing the heavy front doors behind him with a resounding thud that echoed through the foyer. He crossed the marble floor in three long strides, stopping just inches from her. "My wife almost died last night. My premature children are fighting for every breath in an incubator. And you're standing here drinking tea?"
Eleanor lifted her chin, her eyes flashing with stubborn arrogance. "I told you, Adam, that girl was a parasite. She was never suited for our world. Her background, her family, her lack of ambition—she was dragging you down. What I did was an unpleasant necessity. In six months, you would have thanked me."
"Thanked you?" Adam let out a dark, cynical laugh that held no humor at all. "You drugged her. You hired a compromised doctor to break into my home and force a termination. That isn't a necessity, Mother. That is a felony."
Eleanor’s expression tightened, a flash of genuine anger breaking through her icy facade. "Watch your tone with me, Adam! Who do you think built the fortune that allows you to play the noble surgeon? Who secured your position at St. Mary’s? Without the Carter name, you are nothing! That girl used you to climb into a life she could never earn on her own!"
"She loved me for me," Adam shouted, his voice finally breaking through the quiet halls of the mansion. "Not for the money. Not for the biotech stocks. Not for the goddamn last name! Something you and Father have never understood."
He pulled a thick manila envelope from his jacket and slammed it onto the mahogany console table, right beside her teacup.
"What is that?" Eleanor asked, her eyes narrowing.
"That is a certified copy of the police report, the toxicological findings from the hospital, and the digital surveillance footage from my apartment building showing you and Dr. Sterling entering my home," Adam said, his voice cold and steady. "It has already been filed with the district attorney's office."
Color drained from Eleanor’s face, leaving her looking suddenly old and fragile beneath her makeup. "You... you filed criminal charges against your own mother?"
"You aren't my mother anymore," Adam said quietly. "You're just a criminal who happens to share my DNA. The police are on their way here with a warrant for your arrest, and Dr. Sterling’s medical license is being revoked as we speak."
He turned his back on her, walking toward the heavy oak doors without looking back once.

"Adam!" Eleanor screamed, her aristocratic composure finally shattering completely. "You can't do this! You'll destroy our family name!"
"Good," Adam muttered, stepping out into the sunlight and pulling the doors shut behind him.
